It's important to set boundaries with family. They don't get a free pass just because they share blood or marriage ties.

I’ve cut family off. I cut my own mother off for refusing to stay clean from drugs and she has a 13 year old daughter. She’s putting her in jeopardy knowing she lost the rest of us kids from her drug use when we were four and five years old.

I joined the military against the ultimate wishes of my family. My biological mother disowned me when I was 23, and living in Phoenix, Arizona at the time. I moved back to Minnesota shortly after, only to get chastised by other family members. "Howard, why did you run away?" I was 23 at the time, and I wanted to explore new places. I told my family: "I'm an adult. Deal with it." My family hated me going into the Navy, because I matured and developed character. It's a great feeling when you're young, and you can look someone dead in the eye with confidence, because you accomplished something on your own. I managed eight years in the Navy, and fourteen years Air Force, making twenty two years total. I also managed getting a Bachelor's degree. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Do it anyway.
