I think one of best things about the "Broken Matt" character and one of the big things that helped it catch was the fact that publicly he was in character. At shows, conventions, and what not he always stayed in character and even on podcasts like Talk is Jericho...he would do the interviews in character rather than telling you all the "behind the scenes" info on the character you had to figure it out as it went along, it was the closest thing to a "kayfabe" gimmick there had been in years.
