Yea the pacing is for sure an adaptation issue more so than other anime, it's a better read. It's nearly half the show. In terms of them not sending other hunters, it was explained early on, Meruem is able to gain the Nen ability of the people he eats, they didn't wanna throw bodies at him to eat and get stronger so they just threw 1 really strong guy. They left the royal guards to just a mission to literally buy time for Netero to fight. I mean look at him when he ate Pouf and Youpi, he was full goblin mode no one could stop him. im glad you guys love the arc so far!
