Hopefully just two or three hours!

I edited chapter 10 on my laptop which only has like 64 gigs of storage, so I keep everything in the cloud. That has worked just fine for years, but today it finally bit me in the ass.

The whole server is out for some scheduled downtime, which I must have missed the notification for. I do have the chapter in a backup I made earlier this week, but it’s unedited and I remember making some heavy additions to it, so I think I’m just going to wait for the edited chapter to become available again when the scheduled maintenance ends in two or three hours.

So, until then, ask me anything! We could do a little worldbuilding in the comments.

I'm still interested in how the copy/paste effect on the world works overall. Are the multiple Nile rivers now or is the Nile larger (as an example)? Is the a specific date at which technology was reverted or just specific principles? Canned goods as we have them are a more recent development the some firearm technology. We see power went out but does milk and cheese go bad because pasteurization stops working as well? Same with canned goods, tec.

I'm sure you are asked this annoying question in other places, but I didn't see it when I briefly looked on discord. I was wondering when you would be working on the paladin series again? That was how I found you and I will say it's prolly one of my top 10 series out of hundreds I have read, I found it immensely entertaining. I usually listen to books more than reading with my eyes, but I read them and got the audio to enjoy in the future. Anywho, thanks for kick ass books man!

The world is exactly the same as before, but now there's more of it. Simple stuff was duplicated perfectly (So there are probably three times as many jars of pickles, for example, as there were before.) More complicated stuff like cars and supercomputers were also duplicated, but since the System didn't copy them perfectly they're little more than piles of scrap parts. And yeah, the milk and cheese is going bad. It's only been a few hours though, so the survivors should have 3 days or so to salvage the food before it starts becoming unusable.

So the plan right now is to write this book, then Spellheart 9, then Paladin 4. I wanted to do two books in this series at first, but due to the length this novel is likely to go to it probably isn't possible.

Are you going to be keeping the (possible spoiler alert) slave system from the original draft? Imo it was a different take on the trope from most system/apocalypse styles in that instead of a collar you used a harness and its removal required some one trained in slavery. I also remember some backlash around it too.

MarvinKnight

Yeah, that was a theme with very mixed opinions. I'm going to keep what people liked about it and remove what people disliked about it in an effort to have the best of both worlds. It isn't going to play out the same way in this draft, but it'll be present to some extent. Just in a way that will be more palatable to everyone.

Yeah that seems to be common in writing of this genre. Some readers are ok with it, some not so much so they don't read materials containing it. I mean I get it, it's not for everyone. I just liked the fact that I wasn't the same standard system trope.

Just watched an interesting youtube on slavery and how britain was the first to abolish it and police against the slave trade in africa against the portugese spain and france, its not common knowledge not even taught in our schools in the uk. Even why 17 million went to the arab nations or that 7 out of ten male slaves died because the arabs chopped of the meat and two veg and that they did not give up the slave trade till 1962 . So slavery along with prostitution are the two oldest professional trades in the world.

Some of the alien races will definitely be trying to enslave humans in the settings. (Although a lot of them are going to find the humans ready to enslave them right back.)

DiabolicalGenius

Well, I can understand some adjustments to avoid chasing away readers. I just hope you keep it fun and kinky enough. Part of the whole "bored System adding pervy settings to screw with people" thing.

MarvinKnight

Yeah, it will be tough to balance. I haven’t been writing as much lewd stuff recently because it seems like people don’t like it as much anymore (I think I am getting a lot of litrpg and progression fantasy readers who don’t care for sexual content, based on my reviews. I don’t think they are representative of my readership, but it is still a bit demotivational to get a bunch of one stars all complaining about the story having sex scenes.) I might just write this as a FTB harem novel and then add sex later when I’m in the right mood. I’m just not really feeling it right now as much as I hoped. But I will leave room for kinky stuff when I’m feeling better about it again.

In this Earth(ish) world where is the story taking place? What's the region? Will Carter and his crew have to fight winter weather or hurricanes? Will weather/environment stay the same or will the system be changing things? New plants/animals overtime, sentient storms?

MarvinKnight

I’m going to say like Pennsylvania for now, but that will be irrelevant soon. The weather, environment, and geography will all undergo massive changes soon.

Yeah. It's one issue I have with this genre. Nit picky readers who demand an author write the way they want. Let the writers write. If you don't like sex in a story, don't read harem lit. If you ambivalent to it(like me) were totally fine. But review tanking a book because of sex scenes(or lack their of) is just harming the author. Conversely you can always write it full version and release a FTB edit.

How does the system decide whether someone stays the same species or should be a different one?

MarvinKnight

Affinity and achievements. It will be explained in greater detail when it comes up in the story.
