Alright, I had some trouble with the next chapter and I've got some editing/rewriting for Paladin to focus on, so we're doing the poll now.

Rate these ideas in order from most awesome to least awesome. I'm going to try to do more than one thing, but before I do any plotting for what the middle of the story is going to look like I want to see what you guys are interested in.

By full romance arc I mean hitting all the usual notes instead of the truncated romance plotting I usually do. Usually my romance arcs are simple but super flexible to accommodate the needs of the plot. A full romance arc would need to be the other way around with the plot bending to accommodate the needs of the romance.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I have a couple of ideas for each of these. Feel free to suggest your own as well, though I reserve the right to veto if it's something that would dramatically alter the story like, "learn the power to conjure an army of futas from the Dreamrealm."

Strongly recommend romance and merchant angle. With that much gold and someone to keep safe mercenaries would be a smart choice.

The poll doesn't seem to be working as a rate from highest to lowest. I think romancing Mabel, local area events and some dreamwalking should be the short term goals (this book). Part of this could include mercenary/merchants but I think the neighboring feudal lords, intrigue would make a better second/beyond book. Perhaps Alvin actually finds he likes his new in-laws but they are taken out by a rival at the end of the book. For long term goals it would be fun to see Alvin build a railway/train system. Depending on where he's located he could end up connecting the empire with a new steam(spirit?)-powered travel system. Thus strengthening his political, military, and economic power.

Yeah, my bad. I forgot to select allow multiple choice. It's hidden in the settings somewhere and can't be changed once the poll is up. I'll probably do a second poll after the next chapter to clarify the results a little better.

Numbering them 1-6 from top to bottom, I voted 3 since I really want have some power and control over the situation and story like this where the male lead has special power available in the setting and doesn't even try to learn it don't appeal to me. Once he has proficiency in dreamwalking and magic he'll be much better equipped to pursue any of the other choices. He also needs to be able to defend himself from Aldrich coming to take his body back the moment Alvin has things looking up for him and dumping our guy back in the mess he's made of his life on earth. Second choice is 6 since Mabel seems nice and she's currently the one he needs to get along with the most to have any influence over his current situation. If I could I'd choose for him to pursue both this and the first choice at the same time. Romance Mabel during the day and learn dreamwalking at night, since if it's proper romance they won't be jumping straight into bed and may even wait for the wedding. So it'd cover both his most important needs and be efficient use of his time. She also deserves to be treated as more than just a way to maintain some control over his barony. 5 seems like a good way to deal with his dire financial troubles and avoid being completely dependent on the count to pay for everything, good way to regain some control and authority over his situation. Money talks after all. All something he could look into relatively safely on the side while romancing Mabel. 1 and 2 both seem interesting things I'd like to see him do sometime, but both also seem high risk. Al doesn't have Aldlrichs martial skills, no magic yet and no guards that belong to him, so he'd be entirely dependent on Mabel's forces. Also high chance she'll expect him to join in on any action and risk exposing his lack of skills he should have. Definitely put it off until he has magic and maybe a way to absorb Aldrich's skills. Dreamwalking on the guy sounds like a good way to make that happen. Otherwise, getting ahead of himself. Finally 4 IS important and something he needs to do if he intends to remain in a noble position, but going now? NOW? Freshly beaten and humiliated after all the things Aldrich said publicly before the war? They'll tear him to pieces. The only reason to do it any time soon is if he needs to put on a show of punishing himself and apologising at a social event to show the count his sincerity. Otherwise he shouldn't mess with other nobles until he regains enough power and influence to compete. That's pretty much it. My choice is to do all those things, but with appropriate timing and preparation. Al should have just learned the price of being complacent and being caught with his pants down (literally in one case). He should always prepare properly from now on.

I think before we move on we need Alvin and Aldrich need to have a talk and we need to see what Aldrich has done on Alvin's side. They need to decide how they are going to go forward, by either helping each other or by "destroying" the way that the other lived. They are like polar opposite of each other. I'm not sure how you see it going but personally I really need to see how Aldrich decides to act after Al gave up without a fight, or if he even expected him to survive. But as to the next arc, I would say Magic first so he can have some power of his own in this world. Then would be the building of a merchant company to try to fix the financial situation, or the mercanary company and focus more an the strategic side rather than actually combat maybe finding some promising individuals that he can bring in to start his own personal guard. Then I would but exploring and meeting the other nobles around the same level, maybe find an undiscovered recourse that Aldrich's world doesn't now to exploit or making a high level connection that will help him out in the future. As for the romance, I would like to see it sprinkled out throughout an arc or two depending on where Al ends up going. P.S. even with all this said I voted for the mercanary company because I love those stories the most, I can never get enough of them.
