When developing characters, a good way to get variety in shapes and sizes is to draw random scribble silhouettes. Finding different proportions and shapes can make your designs more interesting and you may find characters you wouldn't have ever thought of otherwise. You can be very loose and fast with the rough silhouettes, and bring in the finer rendering later and develop the character even further.
