On a side note, I change this part of the story many times. At one point, I had them have a huge fight about why the mother changed Kai without asking; something along the lines that Kai only kept to himself and only came down when asked. The mother felt like she had failed as a parent and wanted Kai to come to her for help.

While those motivations might be true, the tone that conversation set wasn't the story I wanted to tell; plus, I felt I was reacting to some of the responses I was getting rather than making what I wanted. Those feelings might come to the surface in later chapters, but I'll be a bit more subtle about it.
