(Sorry it’s kinda long. I can get wordy when I am feeling something. -J) Before I comment on individual tropes, I believe an overarching problem with BLs is the lack of believable character and/or story development. These shows rely too heavily on tropes to fill in the blanks where the story has gaps. It makes many series unbelievable, disjointed, and forgettable. There was a massive amount of BLs released in 2021 and 2022, and I doubt even a handful of them were memorable enough to rewatch or recommend because they lacked any substance. The studios seem focused on profits more than plot, and because BL fans are loyal, we will eat whatever they feed us, even if we grumble and hate it (2gether, SOTUS, Enchante, etc.). Because of the lack of character development, flawed characters suddenly become perfect, which is unrealistic. Personally, I love a complex protagonist (Type is my perfect example) IF there is a realistic change in their behavior by the final episode. Some fans react negatively to situations or traits they feel are wrong without acknowledging that people aren’t perfect and bad things to happen to and between good people. For some, scenes with non-consensual kisses/touching, sex while intoxicated, etc. can be uncomfortable to watch, but I hate a story that is too perfect and cheesy. A perfect character is a boring character; there are no perfect love stories. But if I am supposed to hate a character, there needs to be development in their personality for me to start to like them. Too many characters are horrible people, and we are supposed to ignore those traits/behaviors because they have a cutesy moment with their partner? I need to see a realistic change in the character, not a sudden change in episode 11 so that the series ends on a cute note. Also, if something bad happens, is it addressed or quickly forgotten? If there is a non-consensual kiss, let’s see the characters realistically deal with it. Or, show how the character on the receiving end might have resisted the advances, but the other character broke down their barriers. (But, consent is also something that gets blurry in BLs, and I have some opinions that seem to differ from many fans, so that discussion is for another day and video.) It’s the sudden changes in the characters, the random and unexplained time skips, that are some of the worst tropes (TharnType 2 and, as much as I loved it, Bad Buddy also had that weird time jump in the last episode that seemed to be out of character for Pat and Pran to pretend to be broken up). It shows a lack of creativity and story telling. We are supposed to just imagine everything is great during that time jump, I guess. The “I loved you all along” trope is overdone. Especially when it’s shown in one quick flashback that looks shoehorned into the series (2gether). Some of the actions/behaviors are so out of character for someone supposedly In love. And after they have treated their love interest horribly, that person quickly forgets that treatment once there is a kiss (or a high-five, in the case of 2gether). That’s just a lack of real direction or plot. I am sure you will touch on this, but I also hate the addition of multiple couples to pad the runtime. One relationship should be interesting enough; there’s enough shit happening in real relationships to fill many seasons of a series. I don’t want to see another couple because the studio thinks “Well, if they don’t like A and B, they’ll like C and D.” Just focus on A and B! (Okay, this is enough for me! Sorry it’s so long and wordy! Can’t wait for the next part!)

I might need my own YouTube channel so we can discuss these shows at length. So many shows we got pumped for, then we watched it like 🤷🏾‍♂️😒🫢🥱. (I know you are feeling that way about Star in Your Sky… lol).
