If the first episode made me cry three times, then I'm sure the show will continue to be good in it's own way.

Jim Watkins

sadly i'm not gonna watch this show, i trust the judgement of dimartino and konietzko and this clearly isn't their vision, but I look forward to their next avatar project

Jon

When will the edited version be posted?

Nick R

maybe give the show a chance first. the sets, costumes, and effects are leagues above the movie. The main story points are there, so what if it veers from the original cartoon, why would we want a cut and paste of the cartoon anyway. I think if you treat this project as its own thing and look for the good parts of it, you may enjoy it. But if you look for the bad parts, thats all you will find. think iroh said something like that

"Somehow the Avatar returned" - Don't worry Suraj I caught that even though no one else did. God damn disney.

Devin Eleven

I'd say watch it and form your own thoughts. If you don't like it after seeing it, at least then, that's your own opinion. It's good to take into consideration other peoples views BUT not as gospel. There's soooo many good shows and movies I've almost not seen because of someone else. Likewise I've definitely been disappointed by shows, movies and games because of the same thing (I liked the director, actors, reviewer but still ended up not liking the project)🤷

People like you have mental health problems. This is an adaptation. Its not supposed to be pound for pound like the cartoon. I pray you get for your condition

Chris Roark

Am I the only one that has to have the edited reaction/discussion first before watching lol

Honestly people are overexaggerating and being overly dramatic when it comes to the changes made in this show. Like I get it, everyone is passionate about this show and these characters because it's from our childhoods and close to our hearts, but it's honestly not as bad as people are making it out to be and the changes they made were not really severe, like does it have it's problems? Sure like all other shows, but when it comes to the changes, they either just tweeked how events played out in this version or they just added brand new scenes to flesh the characters out more or give us more insight into the characters. For the most part I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation, and I do hope they get the chance to continue with these actors, because I would love to see them play the other bigger scenes later on in the story. The highlight for me was Zuko and Iroh, but they were my favorite in the cartoon as well so it's no surprise.

SpeedyCat19

Yeah I need the intro discussion. I don't like just going straight into the reaction

Mavros

Personally, I really didn't like the Suki changes and the blatant replacement of Roku with Kiyoshi for Aang. Zuko and Sokka's actors are still doing a great job tho.

I enjoyed the show much more than I anticipated. While I didn't necessarily like all of the changes, I acknowledge that there are those who are having their first experience with this series and they don't know that those are changes. For those, these characters are still good (for the most part) and they are having unique stories. My biggest problem is uneven performances throughout the series. I really like the performances of Azula, Zuko, Sokka, and Aang but feel like Katara is a little flat. Hoping that it was more of a writing and comparison to the others than anything else. Frankly, I think it is overall a solid series and they do well with some of the emotional payoffs that were in the original, but with a different style. I think that, with more time to properly flesh out the character development and the larger than life scenes moving forward, they will can prove themselves able to walk that line between upbeat kid show and stealthy adult series.

Zee

I’ve seen a lot of conversation about the changes to the show, and while I’m not nearly as passionate as others, I think the switch ups have been fine to me

StrawHat

idk about other people but the problem I had with it is the writing and not the fact that they changed stuff. ofc it's not gonna be the exact same thing but how they wrote the characters and their arcs is what really ruined it for me.

IDK I personally still disagree, I think the core or essence of the characters are still there but seeing as they wanted to go into a more serious route than the cartoon, it makes sense to me that they would cut back on the silly, kiddish parts of these characters and focus on things like Katara's trauma for what the Fire Nation did to her home, Aang's deep dread about the responsibility that looms over his head, Sokka's insecurity that he won't be a great leader or warrior for his people like his father, and Zuko's trauma for just having a shit life, lol. All things that were in the cartoon as well but was overshadowed by the fun parts especially in Book 1, and something I personally wished they had focused more on in Book 1. But who these characters are to their core, I still see it, even with this adaptation.

Hella funny to me that the immersion break in this episode for most folks is Suki getting her full face make up off in a wipe. I'm not mad about it though because Maria Zhang is stunning. Her parents rolled dumb good on her charisma score, I hope she thanks them every chance she gets. The changes to Sokka's characterization worked for me primarily because they pivoted away from his childlike sexism to more of an internal issue for him; in that he has a confidence problem. All his bluster from the OG show was really connected to him being insecure about being left in charge, his abilities as a warrior, and his desire to meet up to his fathers expectations. After this episode in the OG show he pretty much got over that sexist crap and that was like Ep4. I will admit that it does make him a flatter character right now but the actor is carrying it so I don't give a shit. I also see people beefing with the portrayal of Katara and I feel like they also just shifted her guilt about her mother dying from the season 3 ep with Zuko, to forefront. I assume they will preserve her bigger character moments to revolve around her anger with Hakoda when they meet up with him later. Then her growth will be around an internal struggle similar to Sokka. For now she can come off a bit Ember Island Player style Katara but again, I think the performance carries me through any awkwardness, Overall I dig the changes, even in later episodes where the compress and reframe a lot of story points to fit the narrative and tone they have for this adaptation. Not ideal but it usually makes sense. Really digging the upload cadence and quality of your commentary. Y'all seem to have gone in with realistic expectations for the show and it makes way more entertaining to watch it "with" y'all.

Chaos T

I feel the same way as you. Things I'm supposed to be outraged over I'm left with the impression "okay...and?". Feels like some are making a mountain out of a mole hill on some of the criticisms of the live action series.

Chaos T

Sokka's sexism in the cartoon is very much that; a cartoonish representation of sexism. The way those themes were portrayed probably was needed because Avatar was a children's cartoon and moral lessons in cartoon series are often one note, black and white because they have to be for a young audience. As you correctly pointed out, Sokka's blatant "go make me a sandwich woman" sexism was only in the original series for a short time in the first season and none of that nonsense was a thing after episode 4 or 5. The changes to his character seem logical to a live action setting.

Zee

Yeah, it’s not that deep to me. There’s a portion of people who went into this not wanting to like it. That’s their choice but idk. I wasn’t foaming at the mouth. I love Avatar but I’m not one of those “it’s God’s gift to animation” people
