I wonder if Ted is trying hard to be a father figure to Jamie because during the darts episode he mentioned his dad died when he was 16. So he spent a big chunk of his life without a father.

For coaches/managers to be successful now in all pro sports, they almost have to be psychologists. The age where sports managers have an iron fist in controlling things is almost at its end and the best pro sports coaches now try to figure out what their athletes are going through. Ted is just trying to be a good 21st century coach imo.
