I always admire Buffy tackling real issues in a fantasy series and this one is pretty important in showing younger people that violence in relationships is never acceptable. At airing the series always caused conversations, which is so important for things like this. As for Angel, you maybe forgot Giles said to return from hell and torture for hundreds of years with any semblance of self would take remarkable character and strength, so the fact Angel has likely held on to Buffy as his hold on who he is always seems pretty big to me.
