Mello definitely. I just love that instead of playing these subtle chess games like L, Light, and Near his plans are the equivalent of a sledgehammer. Light was used to L and to a small extent Near but Mello's plan was hard to beat it was so friggin crazy nobody would have thought about it. Hijacking a plane and going to an underground crime facility is crazy but it certainly was shocking. And of course they didn't have tech to track a missile because who the hell expects kidnappers to have a damn missile. It's not perfect but damn if it isn't a breath of fresh air.

Mello is the more interesting and distinct character. Near is just a young, less cool, and seemingly more autistic version of L.
