Fun Fact: The story that the guy told Reiner and Bertolt was the one the one Bertolt told Eren happened to him in his hometown during their training with the scouts.

I'm glad you guys caught the reveal at the last second since it went by so fast, lots of other people missed it.

The old man talking to Reiner, Bertolt and Annie serves 2 purposes, he told them that story because he left 3 kids behind to die when he ran away and felt extremely guilty. It's also the same story Bert told Eren and Armin in S1 which coincidentally worked out to be a perfect cover story since the guy killed himself. Second, Bertolt is remembering the old mans story years later because he realizes guilt is why the old man confessed to them and he's feeling guilt right now being a double agent.

One of my favorite things about this show is that it feels like each episodes you watch sheds light on the previous episode. It's like the end has implications on the beginning. Rewatching the show after it's completed is going to be so enjoyable and like a completely new experience.

It's easily missed but Falco's and Colt's surname is Grice, just like Grisha's friend that got pushed of the wall last season episode 20 !

Marcel was the leader of the group, so his death really helps explain why there were so many hiccups in their mission to obtain the Founding Titan, and in part, why they ultimately failed to capture Eren. They were all still kids at that point, in a new land with no family, no direction, no resources to guide them or to fall back to, except each other. Reiner went to the island with his four comrades and was the only Warrior to return to Marley. Add on the fact that he had to betray his own heart time and time again when he fought/killed the Scout members, people whom he grew to care about, in order to accomplish his mission, save his own life, and return to his family. The attempted suicide scene was dark, but it was also fitting considering everything's he went through and how much loss he has experienced.

This episode also adds dimension to Reiner and Porco's dynamic. Given everything we've seen and know about their relationship, like how Porco has disliked Reiner even when they were young and Marcel's sacrifice to save Reiner, it makes the things that Porco does for Reiner (like saving him on the battlefield back in episode 1), mean so much more.

The crazy thing about this story to me is that if you just explained the full picture to someone it's not like it's that out there. But, the way it's written. how we journey toward the truth along with the characters, that's what makes it so brilliant.
