Lt. Gen. Lewis "Chesty" Puller is one of the best officers the USMC ever produced and I believe the most awarded Marine. He's also one of the most beloved commanding officers in American history. I think he was the one who started the tradition that Marine Corp officers in the field don't eat until the enlistedmen are served. This series does a great job showing why he's a legend. He's so loved by the people that served under him that there have been several attempts to upgrade some of his Navy Cross's (in which he has a total of five) to Congressional Medal of Honor's.

I interpreted John Basilone's reaction to getting the Medal of Honor as him wondering why he deserved the highest award a soldier can be awarded when the men on the field with him fought just as bravely as he did.

Marketa is correct, the Marines were underfunded compared to the other branches of the military at this point in the war. For example, their weapons were older compared with the US army. While the Marine Corps is its own separate branch of the military, it falls under the leadership of "The US Department of the Navy." The Marines have sometimes jokingly been referred to as the "Navy's Army." This episode takes place in January 1943, so America has been in the war for about 13 months at this point. Meanwhile in America "Easy Company" is still in training and will for another year at least.

When it comes to medals, most soldiers tend to not feel they deserved it, especially if they lived when a comrade didn't. However there is another mindset which was older that Napoleon summed up with “A soldier will fight long and hard for a piece of colored ribbon.”. Which does make sense as awards, medals, etc... tend to be popular and create a competitive energy and drive, especially in masculine groups. Just look at video game achievements. People will do something laborious and agonizing for a few pixels. So almost all soldiers will feel they don't deserve their medal, but almost all of them subconsciously do try to shoot for them.
