Episode 1 are the first chapters of the Manga but the Anime mainly just includes an Story Arc that should come way later. the anime is basically the Backstory of the Protagonist with some changes

Skipping ep 1 is honestly the best way to view the OG anime for story context reasons. Also it was pretty funny how they almost watched the 2016 version which is widely hated by fans.

Berserk (1997) is a rather low budget production, the animation is pretty eh even for it's time. It more than makes up for it with it's superb painterly art direction, and great soundtrack though.

If I could make any legitimate complaint about the 1997 series (besides missing manga content which every animated adaption has had) it's that the violence is actually very toned down compared to to the manga. Not gonna lie, I love this show and the themes it has. The ending was pretty crazy even for anime. Definitely watch on your own.

They probably should've watched the first episode. Having them watch the 2nd and third episode would have been good if they were planning on watching the entire story but just for a first introduction the first episode is needed.

Also the lack of context surrounding the show and just jumping in also kinda ruined their expectations. Whoever recommended probably should've included some facts about the show or info about the tone or as synopsis instead of just telling them to watch it.

Yeah I don't even know why people request this shows... they are amazing but no one really gets into them unless they watch more than 5 or 6 episodes. Death note is probably the only one that could get you in the very first one.

It was kind of dumb to tell them to skip episode 1. Especially since they aren't doing a full series reaction. The purpose of episode one is to spark your intrest enough so that you actually WANT to sit through the slow burn origin story of how the characters got to where they are in episode 1.

Yeah whats even crazier is the anime is heavily censored, the manga is extremely graphic and dark... but it is also probably the best art in a manga ever.

I understand your point, but the manga doesn't even start like that, so why wouldn't you digest the material the way the author thought it should be enjoyed. Like if you built something like a chair for example and then someone came by and was like I love that chair can I take that design and sell it to other people... and your like sure just keep it a chair, then he starts marketing it as a couch, its not what it is, so why change it?

more like no school lol its america that has a problem with gay characters not japan and definitely not anime which is NOT cartoon and NOT seen as "for kids only", different culture different views on life. 90+% of anime is based on manga and there are TONS are gay characters in 90s anime: sailor uranus and neptune say hi

TELL ME WHAT, TELL ME WHAT, TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT! My love for you is like a truck Berserker, honestly, the manga is god tier but the 97 anime still a good ride it takes away the gore but still had that dark and twisted story and morally grey/ amazing character writing. The first episode is important but the problem is only cover 1 volume of the flash-forward not all 3 volume which gets you invested and wondering what the fuck happen to get to that point

The 1997 anime is the best adaptation of Berserk so far but that’s no saying much since Berserk has truly been given a chance for a good anime. The manga tho! Is the best manga ever in my opinion! The story, characters, art, and everything it’s the best ever imo.

The movies don’t even compare to this Anime. They might look more ”modern” but there is alot of bad CG in them, they skipp alot of things and the pace is ridiculously fast. Adapting Berserk in to three movies is almost the same as adapting Game of Thrones into the same format. I suspect that the people claiming the movies are better only watched the movies to begin with based on animation. The Anime looks “older” but is beautiful in its own right. It captures what Berserk is all about. Its better paced and has amazing music. I would put up the Berserk manga against any fantasy ever written. Berserk is known for its gore in the manga, but Berserk is even more known for being an amazing story, a story that, in the anime and manga community, always has a place in the goat discussion. You watching this was a great surprise!
