Yeah vegeta could do that form too but like cell says he is more experienced than trunks so he knew that form was garbage so Trunks THOUGHT he was stronger but in fact he is not.

They literally mentioned they knew that before Cell even said it here in the episode, so idk why you felt compelled to tell them even though they said they already know.

Yeah, Dragon Ball passed that point where it could have been a generation thing. I cannot foresee Toriyama ever passing the mantle again like he did with Cell. It is basically Goku and Vegeta show. I doubt enough people really wants the focus taken away from those two either at this point. At least with Super they have more time to the other cast members more than Z when it just became the Saiyan show and everyone else got less to do with each arc. I wished Goten and Trunks were given better development. I know the fandom dislikes them at large, but I always felt that was because they never really got any significant development after Majin Buu.

I never realized how much people dislike kid Trunks but I also haven't kept up with fandom opinion much. I liked him and Goten but now they feel forced when they pop up because they do so little that's important.

This episode has one of my favorite abridged cell lines. “Trunks, you couldn’t fathom the amount of dead men behind me.” That is just such a good line, love seeing it

I think the big difference between Naruto and DBZ is that Nauto himself is part of the upcoming generation and always had that gap as bench mark. Plus there was way more important people involved in that generation that the viewer actually cares about. DBZ didn't really focus on a generational difference until the cell saga and by then it was way too late to make it work. Plus going season after season of "wait for Goku" with Vegeta, Piccolo, and Gohan being the big bench marks of comparison.

No I really don't think Gohan actually surpassed Goku. I really feel like Goku was at least on Gohan's peak level. The big thing Goku really wanted to push and at the time Toriyama was planning on doing was that Goku was not going to be around forever and he wanted to pass the torch on. Goku probably could have won against Cell but he made it very clear that he wanted Gohan to step up and do it. He even did the whole speech after they won against Cell and was planning on bringing him back. The whole time he was just pushing his son to step up because he had the power to do it. Now whether or not Gohan really wanted to step up was sort of a maybe at that time because of his character and personality. But I highly doubt Gohan truly surpassed Goku at that time. Especially when you think about it Goku had already hit super saiyan 2 at some point and came back just to end up showing off super saiyan 3. Even though clearly Toriyama wasn't planning on doing that but Goku is the iconic person of the series.

So at the end you guys mentioned how if they ever make DBZ live action, they need someone really good to play trunks. Well, one stunt actor and mega fanboy went above and beyond trying to look like trunks through diet and exercise to get his muscle ratios right. The Trunks that Cell killed didn't beat 17 and 18 in a fight. He deactivated them with their control switches.
