Really great discussions you guys are having! I think when it comes to those sort of differences, whether it be race or religion etc., there has to be a meeting in the middle. Yeah you've got to expect some stupid but well-meaning questions but at the same time people need to use their common sense and realise when something is inappropriate, rude or simply none of their business. I hear a lot of stupid stuff about being disabled and try to keep my cool when it seems ignorant rather than hateful, but sometimes you just want to grab people by the collar and shake them for not thinking things through for even a second. It's a real shame that you've only got three episodes left, but I'm really enjoying these reactions while we still have them! ❤️

Sana’s season just keeps getting better and better! I really don’t want it to end

In my opinion- asking ignorant/stupid questions about someones culture/nationality should not be considered "racist". If it happens once, it could be plain curiosity, if it is repeated, they might be just stupid/lazy or not interested enough to research themselves. The term racist should be applied to people who look down on other races or discriminate against them - not people who ask ignorant questions. I think Micky got the essence of what Isak tried to get through quite well in this regard: That people are now afraid to even ask questions and learn about other cultures, because they could be called racist. Let me ask you a question; Is it better to engage "foreigners" directly and get to know them verbally or to search on the internet, about their culture? You create a better society by asking those stupid questions.

I wasn't really a fan of the Sana & Isak conversation at first, but after a few rewatches I understand it better. I guess the point I took from it is that you should try to reach out to people and understand each other regardless of the differences you may have even if it gets exhausting having to answer ignorant questions. & that some people should try and educate themselves so that they don't come off as ignorant or prejudice. Anyway great episode and what Sana did completely backfired yikes.. But next week is one of my favorite episodes of the season. Can't wait for you to watch it!

thenormies

this! - micky - the word "racist" and "racism" is thrown around too loosely these days

Marketa, you wanted to give Sana a hug and I just wanted to give you both hugs!!! <3 I completely agree with you that it is on people to do the work of educating themselves; it's not the job of the people experiencing ignorance/ prejudice/ racism to perform the emotional labor of having to explain it. That scene is probably the only one in the series where my love for Isak ever wavered.

I think what Isak is referring to is people like Magnus who asks Isak dumb questions like "who is the man and who is the woman in bed?" calls him jokingly a fag etc. or when Emma and Vilde says things like "I love gays! gays are so funny". Isak means to not look at those things as hateful. I think Isak is a bit sheltered though, since he has not experienced much hate yet for being who he is. What Sana describes, being spit at by strangers, and the pepsi max girls comments are harder to just rise above. I don't think he was saying it is her job to educate everyone, I think he was just saying that not all the dumb questions she gets has an hateful agenda like that. Telling people to educate themselves is good, but just saying they should research online might not give such good results because we all know the stuff you can end up finding on the internet. The best way to get rid of prejudice is to talk to eachother face to face.

(I'm gonna be a little controversial in this post, so let me start by saying: I absolutely do not blame the terrorist attack on the gouverment offices and the youth camp at Utøya in 2011 on anyone but the criminal who carried out the attack! And I am not comparing Isak to this man in any way!) What I want, is for you to consider this:When speaking of july 22. in Norway, we often refer to the terrorist as a monster. The troubble is, he wasnt. He was a misguided and troubbled man. He was a person that didnt find the outlet and opening he needed for his views in the norwegian democracy. He never spoke up outside of the echo chambers of the internet. He never asked the stupid questions. After the attacks the norwegian people came together in peaceful demonstrations. The streets were filled with people carrying flowers. Or as the norwegian crown prince put it; the streets were filled with love. A famous quote from a survivor of Utøya was "If one man can show this much hatred. Think of how much love all of us can show."And for weeks, months and even years that was kind of the reality. But then, in 2013 our most rightwinged party joined a coalition with a less right, but still right party and formed our new gouvernment. And the language in the media changed. The words they described fellow norwegians and refugees with was suddenly hostile. And the big bad wolf was muslims. And the debate about wether or not female muslims should be allowed to wear hijabs to work or school was raging. So wearing a hijab for a day, would most certantly show you that a lot of norwegians were rascists. This is why the talk between the muslim and the gay guy in Skam season 3 episode 8, is so important. This is why the (sort of) best buds is an example to all of us.Neither of them has all the answers. Neither of them is all in the right. But the questions they ask. The topics they discuss. They were, and are so important to raise in Norway. And probably a lot of other places in the world. And of all the brilliant conversations in Skam - this one stuck with me the most. It feels like someone feeling the temperature of Norway at that exact moment. If anyone wonders what it feels like to be either a norwegian muslim teen or a norwegian with little to no personal experience with any other culture, and how difficult it can feel to navigate interaction, this is it! If anyone wonders what the big political issues of the day was, this is it! And if anyone needs help to find the words or courage to take on the big or small conversations about this, this is the inspiration they need. Sana and Isak are'nt perfect. They dont have all the answers. They get hot headed and speak before thinking. But they speak up! And they listen..... once again, as Skam has tought us over and over, communication is the key!

This particular last scene was controversial, to say the least. A lot of people was hating on Isak because they thought he was explaining racism to a POC. But it is not like that. Isak is canonically, together with Sana the most academically intelligent character in this show. Maybe Jonas and Noora too, but! Isak was NOT excusing Sara's behaviour, he just said that it is understandable how some people are misguided and ignorant about muslims, youth get all their information from social media and the news, the media are partial and racist. So naturally some people have predjuices about them, but there are some people that are just ignorant and Im sorry if some people don't agree with me. It is our responsibility as POC to educate the ignorant people! We know everyone should educate themselves yes, but if you find an ignorant person, educate them! it is our job to build a better world for those who come after us. You may change the point of view of an ignorant person and even if you don't see the results yourself, that may help to build a better tomorrow. Sana was focusing on the hate and that is understandable, it shouldn't be like that. But at the end of the day it is what it is, and your answer shiuldn't be becoming a spiteful and hateful person! You have to fight against the ignorance and racism everytime you can.

Next episode is my favorite of the whole season!

The one thing I hate about this show is Isak whitesplaining racism to Sana. Like, okay Isak 🙄

Latrae Osborne

oh be quiet. He was explaining why people ask dumb questions about a way of life that they don't interact with on a daily basis. He didn't 'whitesplain' anything. He told her how people in Norway think based on how he grew up and general knowledge. Sana has a cold outlook on life and think everyone's trying to be racist while some people just want to learn

Katharina

Hey Marketa, I hope you are feeling better. I know that past feelings can sometimes catch up with us, even if it happened a long time ago and you are mostly over it by now. Happy holidays and take care!
