The Korra Nation ceremony is here! Kuvira makes an impact with her speech while Tenxin and the Prez stare at her like wtf? I've scheduled these drops ahead of time as I'm currently out of the country! I'll try my best to share thoughts on the ep and reply to comments while I'm away but for the most part I won't be looking at work at all!

Toph is just as hardened as I remember! I love that we are getting some extended time with her as I feel she was the one left out during Book 3 of ATLA. (No Zuko adventure haha) Seems fitting that she would be at the swamp where Aang initially had a vision of her. That's some great storytelling right there!

Bolin: Kuvira is basically just like Korra.. Quite intriguing, the comparison is uncanny 😂 I guess you didn't heard Tenzin, he said Kuvira is throwing her dissenters in prison camps — and that's Kuvira's bad side, well one of them. Anyway, I don't know if you know the news but ATLA is having its own live action series and the creators are the one who will be in charge of everything.

Jules Eris

Wasn't this the episode where we see Zuko's daughter? They had absolutely no reaction to it lol

I always appreciated this show for showing the politics of the Avatar world and this episode is no different. Kuvira may be horrible but the people of the Earth Empire don't know that. They see someone stepping up to help them when it seemed no one else would. So it is easier for her to take over when everyone thinks that she has been doing a good job the entire time. Also any move that Raiko or Tenzin made on her during her speech would've made them look bad. Anyway you look at it Kuvira made herself come out on top which is why they need Korra so badly. The Avatar has more clout to go against her than either of them would.

Jose

Am i the only who notices that they did not notice Fire lord Izumi?? They show her just slightly in this episode. plus lord Zuko was shown with her. Also, I just want to point out the fact that Kuvira decided to take down the Earth Kingdom's monarchy government all-together for a reason not simply because she wants to be in power like fire lord Ozai. With that said, that lead her to create a new "Fascist"-like government where it focuses on strong nationalism, unity, and the total control of the whole nation. This is what the Earth Queen lacked when she was in power. She did not have full control or that unity of the whole nation with the exception of Ba Sing Se and some of the surrounding Earth Kingdom states. Some of her citizens did not have that strong loyalty to their nation instead, they were just roaming around the nation as bandits causing chaos. In this view, even though the Earth Kingdom was ruled by the Earth Queen at the time, they were still imbalanced and did not have that strong unity and loyalty to their nation which is what Kuvira is attempting to work on under her new Earth Empire. At that speech she gave, it was sign for a new era of peace and order for the people of the Earth Kingdom under one strong form of government which is why some of the people from the crowd were cheering in that particular scene because they strongly believe what Kuvira is bringing to the country.

Jose

exaclty the same question I have lol I guess they just talk too much that they missed her scene shot. Probably Suraj saw her when he was editing the video, but the others probably did not which is unfortunate.

Jose

they know that already. they shared a post yesterday about that on facebook.

Toph was the least develop in Atla glad Korra made her great and complete character

Philipp Lembens

I really love that episode, it is so funny AND we have Toph. what more can we want ?? I wonder what you guys are thinking about the ATLA live action series. Personally i do have some mixed feelings about that.

MRBS

It's okay. She has a bit of a larger role in one of the other episodes.

The thing that makes Kuvira such a great villain for this season is that she really isn't wrong, it just comes down to how strong headed and determined she is, to a fault. Kuvira is unifying the Earth Empire, giving food and shelter to those who didn't have it in the 3 year span of time between now and the Earth Kingdom's collapse and filling that vacuum of power left by Zaheer's actions. Prince Wu, in comparison, would just be more of the same as the King from ATLA - a puppet ruler who contributes nothing and yet also, you could argue, contributes to the archaic and destructive system the EK had that existed for hundreds of years. Given the choice, you would definitely go with Kuvira. She has elements of her own that are less than pleasant (that you will see later on), but there really is a great leader in her. This also brings about a discussion about Suyin and disassociating herself/not stepping up to work towards re-unifying the Earth Kingdom, but that's another talk for another episode

i like when you guys said that kuvira was not wrong, if u think about it none of villains in this show are wrong, AMON wants equality, UNALAQ wants spiritual connections, ZAHEER wants freedom from authoritys, and in the end all of them get wat they want. REPUBLIC CITY is governed by a non-bender, the spirits now are free to live in the human world, and earth kigdom/empire are now free from the crazy queen.

Jose

Amon= Equality or Communism, Unalaq= Theocracy, Zaheer= Anarchy, Kuvira= Fascism. This gets to show the ideologies for each individual villain just for you all's information :)

Kuvira was right to do what she did this episode. For years the Earth Kingdom has been an absolute monarchy that does nothing to benefit the majority of citizens. Did you notice that when concerns were brought up about Wu ascending the throne, Raiko quickly says that advisors sent by the United Republic will do most of the work? They're giving the Earth Kingdom a puppet and this time Raiko would be pulling the strings. Kuvira has been rebuilding the Earth Kingdom for years, she's right not to hand it to a spoiled monarch that would make another mess after she just cleaned up.

Bolin's comparison of Korra and Kuvira was really interesting. I can definitely see what he means. In some ways, Kuvira basically reminded me of the more confident/cocky version of Korra back in S1/S2. Especially S2 Korra, the one that had good intentions but went about things in questionable ways and with a not-so-great attitude. There's also the obvious one that since Korra was out of action, Kuvira basically filled in her role for her. I'm sure Korra does want to get better, but I also think there's a part of her subconsciously that doesn't want to get better exactly because of what Toph said. I mean, there's no denying that she does get hurt a lot by her enemies because of the fact she's the Avatar. Toph as usual, is just dishing out some hard truths. All of these issues that has been plaguing Korra for a long time now, it's something that she's going to have to face sooner or later. Toph can help her, but there's only so much she can do for her. In the end, it all comes down to Korra if she's ever going to get better. Wu: This is the worse coronation ever!! Azula: Hold my beer. Also, here's something fun to look at! Wu doing Beyonce's Who Run the World dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=symLa01UDVA

Lalisa Truong

Also, considering a lot of her supporters are there and the whole crowd was basically cheering for her, it would definitely make Raiko or Tenzin look bad if they did anything.

So this isn't related to the video but I feel like I should bring it up. Has everyone here heard about the new live action reboot of ATLA? Netflix announced it yesterday. I think it starts production next year. I'm..... apprehensive.

Commander Dodge

Toph always has been and always will be my favorite ATLA character!

Frankie H

Yeah animation gives the creators so much more freedom, I don't know why they would decide to do live action. It seems so limiting. Still hoping for the best though.

Frankie H

Kuvira is bringing technology and wealth at the cost of freedom and liberty. It's a trade that people often made time and again in history.

MojoJojoGojo

Hurt y'all missed it but fire Lord Izumi was there next to zuko. Lol

Omg Netflix is doing a liveaction series of ATLA, with the creators as excecutive producers! I am walking on clouds right now, PLEASE react to it once it airs

King Abydos

Theres a big difference between a monarchy and a dictatorship, the key point behind a monarchy isn't that there is one person ruling over others contrary to popular belief. The most important concept of a monarchy is Dynasty which is where the ruler has a blood line directly linked to the ruling position of the nation so their children will rule after they die and then after that their grandchildren an so on. This is what Kuvira is addressing in her speech when she says the archaic passing of power from kings to queens was the main reason the earth kingdom is in disarray. Kuvira is punting herself in the position of what seems to be more of a meritocracy based dictatorship where she directly leads the country as the one person in charge because she has earned the right to do so with her skill and leadership and most likely when she would be old enough to pass on the torch it would be to someone else who was most fir to lead rather then her own children which is merit based rather than dynasty based. #Kuviradidnothingwrong

Great news avatar got picked up for a live action Netflix series.

King Abydos

also that wasn't the real throne room, the throne room isnt in republic city, the restaurant is a recreation in "Little Ba Sing Se" like little italy or china town in NYC

KP

The next 3 episodes are so great!

Luis Benavides

Man the Earth Kingdom has been in turmoil for a long time. arguably through Avatar Kyoshi whose actions had ramifications for centuries to come. sometimes you need a general type person to lead a nation onto the right path...mmm this subject is very grey but I love every bit of it.

Anonymous

In Kuvira’s defence, she was put in an impossible situation, and answered it with an extreme solution. That being said, that doesn’t forgive her fascism.

Anonymous

You fuckers are like every new fan just binge the fuck out of a show and don't really get or let every thing sink in these reactions are going to be shitty the rest of the show

Anonymous

They can't just talk to her in public you fucking retards

Anonymous

Did you notice Zuko and the fire lord was at the coronation????????

Cls

Sooo.... Voltrons next right?

Rufus May

It's not really appropriate for someone like Raiko or Tenzin to openly interfere with Earth Kingdom politics. Whether they think she's a good leader or not, it's really none of their business.

Anonymous

the reason why you guys might empathise with the villains on legend of kora is because all the villains represent a different extreme political philosophy’s which all can have appealing aspects but never work out in reality just like there were flaws in many of the villains ideas. Session 1 Amon was a communist Season 2 Tarrlok was a theocracy season 3 Zaheer was an anarchist and season 4 Kuvira is a fascist.

Alisha Brayboy

OMG I just had some major flashbacks. Does the fight between Mako and Bolin about the leaders they support remind anyone else of the 2016 Election? Picture trump and Hillary supporters saying the same things as they fight and it totally fits!

Jose

Well, she was considered as the temporary leader who would bring order to the Earth Kingdom and was tasked by Raiko and Tenzin and some other world leaders. So they have the right to interfere in Earth Kingdom politics because they were the ones to take responsibility on the country.

Jose

If i would have been an Earth Kingdom citizen, I would have voted for Kuvira. She has my word.

Anonymous

Kuvira is also the closest to the Original Fire Nation from ATLA. Believe in industrialization and technology as the way forward. Also the whole unification thing.

Lavota Carter

This is why I think in the long run Korra is better than ATLA because the villians are relatable and the creators created Avatar-universe compliant issues to show theocracy, communism, facism, anarchy. ATLA was more focused on the cycle of war and hate and how it affects all generations from the aggressor and the oppressed.

Anyone else cautiously excited for the live action ATLA remake with the original creators on Netflix?

Anonymous

PLEASE READ! THIS IS NOT A JOKE! Rachel Espiritu

For all Kuvira's comparisons to fascism, what freedoms is she actually denying her people at this point? She's not installing herself as a leader in the city states, she's allowing the existing leaders to continue leading exactly as they were. She's not even enforcing any military presence to keep her colonies in line, only offering her support in defense from bandit raids. It's left ambiguous as to whether Kuvira is supplying the bandits, but I honestly don't think she is. The attacks are going to happen with or without her, and the mere lack of her flags over any city is like a giant welcome mat for them, so why risk implicating herself or waste resources to encourage something that's going to happen anyway? And what else? Resources? She's providing the food and resources the cities lack and not even raising taxes to compensate. I mean, this is a world that has literally infinite renewable energy due to bending, there is no reason for scarcity to exist here, people just need help getting connected to each other to allow for easier trade. Looking at the history of the Earth Kingdom, exchanging resources has really never been possible because of its sheer size and the giant desert in the middle of it, but Kuvira's push for technology is finally going to make that possible. (Also I HIGHLY recommend Hello Future Me's video on Avatar's worldbuilding, explaining the Earth Kingdom's problems in depth). Looking to Earth Kingdom history, I think it needs to be said, we don't know the full truth of what Avatar Kyoshi did. Her account of Chin the Conqueror painted him as a vicious tyrant, but we also know that she sided with the monarchy so she had a clear bias. The uprising didn't come out of nowhere though, there had been many peasant uprisings in Ba Sing Se over the terrible rule of monarchs, and Kyoshi's choice to establish the Dai Li only served to further cement the power of the monarchy. So in a sense, it wouldn't surprise me if this is the logical conclusion to the last three hundred years of Earth Kingdom history. The people don't want this monarchy, and who could blame them? The last time a "conqueror" emerged, he was put down by the avatar of his day and the monarchy only grew more corrupt. But so far Kuvira hasn't been seizing power just for power's sake, she's not taking wealth for herself, she has no plans to invade other nations, she's really only focused on uniting the citystates. Maybe it's not Kuvira that hasn't learned from history, maybe it's everyone else.

Rebel Pilot

also I feel like certain action she did (like punishing non earthbenders ) felt forced to fit into the concentration camp fascist trope. Kuvira strikes me as the sort who would welcome anyone who is loyal to Her empire no matter their bending background. Even more so diversity makes stronger even more so in the bending world.
