What makes the ending so amazing is that the Avatar State is so powerful and whenever we see it shows massive amounts of power and strength.. but in this scene we see Aang crying, and crying usually indicates a sense of weakness/vulnerability.. so seeing the avatar state (Very powerful/strength) combined with Crying (Weak/Vulnerable) just makes it so much more amazing and emotional. Combined with the amazing soundtrack, Katara's love and the fact that Appa is Aangs only family/connection he has left from his Air Nomad heritage..

Drew

Man I just watched The Library, the timing feels good.

Avatar pun of the day: Those Vulture Bees were real Buzz-ards

A little interesting note: this was also tophs first time seeing (in this case feeling) Aang's avatar state. You can see her amazement at 13:38 ...also the avatar state isn't always triggered by emotion or danger. He was able to do it without it on the season one finale as well as the solstice episode.

Appa-rently someone is cutting onions

Lalisa Truong

Exactly why that ending gets me every time, no matter how many times I rewatch! In that moment, you're basically feeling everything that Aang was feeling. Anger, loss, grief, and hopelessness - all in one moment. Appa wasn't just a pet to Aang, he was also his best friend and the only thing left from his old life and his entire culture (aside from Momo).

The White Lotus is badass just wait

Lalisa Truong

I can definitely understand if people view Aang as an asshole in this episode, but at the same time, considering who he lost, I can also understand why he's just so angry. Appa wasn't just a pet to Aang, he was more than that. He was his best friend and the only living connection to his old life before the war. Aside from Momo, Appa is also the last of his entire culture. This was a really heavy loss for Aang...The ending was both powerful and emotional for me. "You MUZZLED Appa?!" Just the right amount of anger and disbelief in his voice gave me immense chills. Little fun fact, Zach Tyler Eisen (Aang's VA) while living in Connecticut, did majority of his recordings via satellite. For a kid VA at the time, he really nailed all of Aang's lines pretty well. His range was just impressive. Also, Aang cried both times at the end of these two episodes D;

tha last minute of the episode though...

Keep It Zen

Hey Normies, Aang did in fact kill that Buzzard-Wasp. If you look closely while it's falling, its head is chopped off. A testament to how enraged he was.

rickie woodson

the power of friendship lol

Lalisa Truong

They're also going to Ba Sing Se in order to hide in plain sight. If you rewatch, Iroh explicitly says that :)

rickie woodson

dont know what you were reading but there is no episode called the secret of the fire nation and its definitely not the next episode's name lol

rickie woodson

there is more to it: the air nomads went through genocide so appa and aang are the last of their culture so its not just that he is losing his friend he is losing his culture all over again. still think he could have handled it better. that was a LOT of misplaced anger. dont scream at your friends attack the bad guys who actually did you harm

The next two episodes aired at the same time, and Nick called the two episodes together "The Secret of the Fire Nation". Not entirely sure why they did, but that's where it comes from.

Kris

damn that last scene always brings a tear to my eye.

Keep It Zen

Well since the moon spirit was killed and the moon disappeared, the entire world was in danger. So that could have triggered it.

What I like so much about this episode is that is shows how something that would usually be so easy for the gang, getting out of the desert, is suddenly so difficult without Appa. The team really relies on him more than I realized before this episode. It's also cool to see Aang, the happiest character ever, in such a dark state of mind. Great reaction I'm excited for the next one! :)

Rich Cassou

Not going to lie I wouldn't have minded seeing Aang decimate the sandbenders in the avatar state but I'm glad Katara calmed him down.

Always a good day when you get an email about Avatar

This is my favorite episode of Avatar, the last scene of this episode is my favorite scene in the entire avatar series, my second favorite is in the season 2 finale and my 3rd favorite is in the season 3 finale.

Jackie

Fun fact: Princess Yue (月) literally means moon in Mandarin.

Very rarely. Most of the time if they are showing avatar then it's LoK, not ATLA

Lalisa Truong

Not to mention the slicing noise, the dead drop, the silence, and the cut to Aang's face right after was pretty telling....

Lalisa Truong

But how could he have handled it better? He's a 12-year old kid that just experienced another deep loss, a loss that he felt he could've prevented. I doubt the monks taught him how to properly deal with this kind of negative emotion Lol for the record, he did attack the bad guys eventually xD

Keep It Zen

Yes! I always have trouble deciding my favorite. Its between The Desert, The Siege of The North PT 2, and one from Book 3 that I shall not name. But something about this one screams to me FAVORITE.

Srey

Appa is more than a pet, he is Aang animal guide, I bet Roku would be as pissed if someone took or hurt his dragon, and also he is the only thing left from his time and his old life :)

Drew

Exactly, Appa is like his dire wolf.

Anthony Dimas

Does anyone else notice tophs face? This is her first time feeling/hearing Aang in the Avatar state. She has a look of shock & fear. She hears the earth running beneath her and the wind blow. Sokka sold that "Just get out of here! RUN!" line. All the Avatar voices speaking as one. It was epic. I say he cares about Appa so much that, Aang himself felt threatened. He, appa, and momo are the last of their kind. They're all he has of his past life. His family And oF course.. katara being the MVP! Keeping everyone in line and when the look Aang gave her when she grabbed his arm was bone chilling. So much pain and anger. And katara looks back with pain and understanding. She out of all people know how it is like to have someone you absolutely love be taken from you. I love this show and it's attention to detail!!!!!
