There might be some spoilers here for what happens to Hannah in the show. But we had a little discussion about this before watching Buffy that I wanted to share in the Vault. Enjoy!

I think the way they made the show DOES glorify suicide with the tapes and vindictiveness and her gaining attention by committing the act. It makes it seem like suicide is a reasonable method of gaining attention or getting revenge when in truth, sadly, people just move on with little to no care, except for the few people close to you who are hurt or broken by it. I believe they made the show and book this way because if they didn't people wouldn't watch/read, and there wouldn't be as much exposure on the topic. It ends up being an unfortunate trade-off between realism and actually getting people to watch and care. If they didn't present it in such a way, people would just move on without giving it a chance because, let's be honest, this is a very difficult and uncomfortable topic for people. So, I get why the show is the way it is. At the very least it has started a discussion and dialogue amongst people who otherwise would not give the concept of suicide or mental illness a second thought. However, I also think it's important to recognize that it is still a fictional show, made for the purpose of entertainment, not necessarily realistic to mental illness and the reactions to it, and that it is definitely not above reproach.

I agree with most of what you guys said, Hannah made a lot of great points, I totally agree.

I don't think the show glorifies suicide at all. That final Hannah scene made me feel physically sick and anyone who thinks it's a good idea after seeing that scene was already seriously, seriously messed up.

Navi should read the book its better

I agree with every word you said I always thought I was completely messed up.

I agree with Pat on this, a lot of people are looking too deep and not appreciating the show.

rickie woodson

they are so right, it would work out that way. i mean look up the youtube videos of people who killed themselves, high numbers

rickie woodson

the show is produced by selena gomez and her mom. selena herelf suffers from depression so yeah they know how it is. also as someone has suffered through depression my entire life i didnt seek help as kid/teen and the counselors/teachers at my school ignored the fact that 1. i was depressed 2. was bullied 3. was suicidal. thats great you went to a school where they cared but that isnt everyone's experience. you can only speak for yourself, you cant assume thats everyone's experience

rickie woodson

just noticed her name is the same as this korean r&b singer lol (look up her song "love u" feat. tablo). there is no v in korean so its written in korean as nabi which means butterfly

rickie woodson

who do you think is in both avatar and shameless cause i looked it up on imdb and there isnt anyone who has shameless listed on their pages and i've watched both multiple times and never seen any of them on the show. summer (who plays azula) is on magicians and nicola who played katara does movies and was in bates motel

For the first half or maybe two thirds of the show I saw the point some of you made that the show "glorifies suicide". Hannah seems so aggressive and confrontational I found it hard to believe she'd commit suicide at all. It seemed like "You're so mean and it's all your fault I'm dead now, hope you're sorry, ha!". However, the longer the show went on and through Clay confronting everyone it allowed everyone else to apologize and even justify their actions/make them less evil (I even felt for Justin a little) and also showed Hannah's own mistakes and lash-outs that hurt the others. It makes the show less about mean bullies but more about understanding bullying and finding solutions on what works better. Towards the end I kept getting the feeling that 3 of the peple (Alex, Justin and the "stalker", forgot the name) could commit suicide as well because of the way everyone kept treating them like noone learned from Hannah's suicide. It'll make an interesting Season 2.

What you all fail to understand is that this is not a show about why you shouldn't kill yourseIf, it's a show about why people need to stop treating others like shit. It shows how simple bullying that may not seem that serious to someone looking at it from the outside can still have a major affect on someone. (Spoilers) I won't argue that what she did with the tapes wasn't vindictive, but who knows what someone might do after witnessing their friend get raped and then proceed to get raped by the same guy. She sought out help from the guidance counselor and he did nothing either. You guys being wrapped up in the "She shouldn't have killed herself. Suicide wrong." aspect makes you just like the school and how they handled Hannah's suicide. "What Hannah did wasn't right. Her problems were her owns. Suicide is cowardly." Well, in the words of Ashley Purdy, "Suicide isn't cowardly. I'll tell you what's cowardly; treating people so badly that they want to end their lives. Suicide is by no means okay, and I think the show portrays that too. It shows that the suicide had no good impact on anyone. Hannah's parents are left miserable. Besides, the tapes got the selfish kids at the school (who, mind you, are pretty shitty) to at least be less shitty, and it may possibly lead to Bryce answering for his crimes. The mind is a fragile thing, and although they could have shown that Hannah's mind broke prior to her suicide a little more, sometimes it's not so obvious. I think they showed it subtly on purpose, because in the real world there aren't always flashing signs, and you never know what's going on in someone's head, another point the show tries to get across. Hannah's not a naturally shitty person. She was a product of the shit she got from other's, and when people throw so much shit on you, you're bound to come out shitty yourself. P.S: The show did show that the tapes weren't good, and left the idea that Tony wasn't doing the right thing by doing what Hannah wanted and keeping it from her mother, which by the end of the series he realizes.

To say "if you go to someone that wouldn't happen" is crazy. I know someone who went to their parents and their PARENTS said there was nothing they could do and not to tell anyone.
