Season 6 isn't as entertaining to me as 1-5 but I think the storytelling – in the broad sense of the term – is brilliant. The writers have done this from the start but it's gotten better over time; weaving a story line in and out of season-long plots and mini-arcs until it's time to bring it front and center for the big finish. They also like to play around with an episode's – or a story-line's – Point of View and leave it for the viewer to figure out. Like Spike being exposed as The Doctor in the last episode without any on-screen setup. We had been seeing Spike through Buffy's eyes for a while and when she complained to a soulless vampire about needing money, Buffy didn't think anything about it and was really surprised to learn he was scheming to get cash for her. Riley, and eventually Sam, seemed too perfect, almost Fairy Tale perfect, as Buffy looked up from that pit of despair behind the counter at the Doublemeat Palace. Not saying Sam was correct all the time but she seemed to say what each character needed to hear at that time. Xander's story line since episode 5-3 (The Replacement) was internal but the results of it show up frequently enough to make a clear plot line. It's just a matter of putting it together. Someone used the term 'fake vision' (or something similar) to describe what Xander experienced but, if Stewart Burns, Philanderer, is to be believed, those were Xander's own fears of what his marriage was going to be like.
