I agree with you. Overall, they did a great job about retelling the story of "Avatar : Last Airbender". All the new things added were very interesting, especially the parts about the past avatars. Zuko's and Azula's character developement were very compelling. Monk Gyatso's gentleness, or Ozaï's insidious manipulative ways, even Zoa's schemings, and Iroh's support for Zuko were all very well portrayed. The visual effects for the different bendings skills were really great. I know some people have complaints about the scramble storylines of Jet, Sai the mechanist, and King Bumi, and i admit it, it could have been better written. But for me, the part that they needed to do a much better job, was Aang, which is weird because he is the main character. During the entire season Aang's dialogue felt clunky in places and sometimes a little cliché. Every episode, Aang repeated the same awkward sentences : - i'am the avatar - i need to learn the other bending diciplines. It started to ring rather hollow, and it felt a little discordant when his actions didn't match his words, especially after he did not even try to start learning water bending alongside Katara. The showrunners had a very difficult task with adaptating this animated series. They had to walk the fine line between giving new things for the people who already saw the anime and to attract a new audience by bringing back the core elements of the orignal story. It must have been so hard to achieve and maintain balance between the two. (And yes, pun intended)
