I think no. Can some gurus and teachers be the catalyst for an experience? Yes. Can your local bartender be a catalyst? Yes.

I have heard it said that when one is trekking through uncharted territory, it's best to have an experienced guide. This is not to say that this should be a permanent relationship. After some time, one should be able to travel without such support.
