I only buy games when I know that I really want to play them so recently it was resident evil 4 and I beat that just in time for jedi survivor. Other games like Zelda and street fighter interest me enough to keep am eye out after they come out but I'm also still trying to catch up on backlog games or play something like fortnite when I have time to play with friends. Also been a big fan for a while now and finally feel financially comfortable to support on patreon, so thanks for giving me enough content to get me through long days at work!

Long winded answer here, Most of my gaming time takes place between 9-12 PM during week days and sporadically throughout the day into the late night during the weekends. Right now I’m in a chaotic state of gaming where I’m playing a bunch of games on my Xbox backlog from either Game Pass or previous purchases. Just beat Hi-Fi Rush this past weekend, but I’ve been chipping away at that while simultaneously chipping away at my first Portal 2 playthrough, trying to get back into my first playthrough of Hellblade I started a couple years back and jumping into new Game Pass drops like Minecraft Legends just to get by while I wait for the next BIG game which for me would be Jedi Survivor. I was grinding on the PS5 backlog the previous months this year since I’ve never had a PlayStation until last October so I’m all caught up on most Sony first party titles atm. Zelda is going to be huge for me though. I probably won’t even finish Jedi Survivor before jumping into TOTK because I’m that hyped for it. Just like everyone else finding the time to play all the games you want is the real challenge.

I’m definitely not buying most games day one. In fact, unless it’s on Game Pass, I won’t be playing it unless it goes on sale. That works for me too given the huge backlog I’ve got. The only exception to that is if it’s a game I’m really looking forward to and I’ve been hearing good things. But even in the case of Diablo 4, I’m super excited for it but I’m waiting for release to see reviews to see if it’s still what I want to play after launch. I have a whole group on my Xbox dashboard called Backlog that’s just games I plan on playing.

Hey Greg, first time writer, long time listener. I only have a certain amount of mental real estate to commit to gaming. When I get home from work, I want to do all the gaming in the world, but I'm tired so I try not to focus on anything that is too thought heavy. I know it sounds weird, but my comfort games are Bloodborne and Elden Ring, but when I'm not dedicated to them, I'm playing modded Minecraft or Pokémon. My current excitement is for Zelda, it's about the most excited I've been for a game since Breath of the Wild and since GTA5's initial release on the PS4 before that. But the sad thing through all of that is the moment I stop and try to play something for my enjoyment, I immediately start falling asleep. I hope to start writing in more, I'm usually a lurker, but I felt compelled to say my piece.

Ben and my son are only a few weeks apart, so when you talk about working, then coming home and being a dad, being a husband, that really resonates with me. Ever since my son was born my backlog has been ridiculous. For the most part I don't game, when there is something I really want to play like GOW Ragnarok, I binge it till I roll credits. Usually late nights. But that's why I listen to KF, it fills me in and keeps me in the world of video games even though I don't really get to play.

I buy everything I can and kill myself to get to all of them. But it's what makes me happy so it's all pretty worth it. The alternative having all the time in the world and no games to play is far more depressing.

While I love gaming, it is a hobby that I find myself going to less and less. I watch so much content, because it is just more relaxing for me after a long day of work and life. I have also been way more picky with games. So it generally goes like this… if a big game is coming out that I know I will 100%, I will buy it. Games like God of War, and Tears of the Kingdom. I make time for those games. Any other game I’m interested in but most likely won’t make time for, I’ll just watch you all talk about it, or watch a play through. This has been how I consume a majority of games recently.

How I choose what to play as a married man without a kid: I generally have 2 games I’m playing at one time, and I usually want them to be different genres. For example, before I beat it last weekend, I was playing RE4 and PGA Tour. I also may have a 3rd game to play on my switch so I can be on the couch while my wife watches tv (right now it’s pokemon). My issue comes when genres near align like Jedi Survivor and Zelda. I’m incredibly excited for both those games, but I know playing both at the same time wouldn’t be enjoyable. I also know I usually can’t beat any single player game in less than a month, so whatever I choose to put off, I lose out on being able to participate in the immediate conversation around. With Jedi coming up next week, I have a big decision to make, and I’m still not sure what to do!

My gaming schedule since the pandemic to now living with my wife and moving in together has shift a lot. Start of the pandemic till about last year in March it was non stop gaming from about 9pm till whenever the boys got off. Lots of warzone, if there was a single player game I wanted to play that was saved for saturday mornings. I’d wake up at around 4/5am play till about 1 or 2pm then continue my day. Nowadays with work life balance it’s dwindled down. During the week when my wife wakes up for work (4am) I wake up as well and play for about 2 hours before myself going to work. I find myself playing Pokémon go more than regular games. Though due to their lack of communication and tbh finding every way to make the game not fun for active players I’ve been dialing that back too. Weekends are still gaming however now from 8am-10am so if there’s a single player game I wanna play I slowly work my way through it while focusing on main story line. If there’s new games that I wanna play but know I can’t get to them then I won’t purchase them until they go on sale. (Need for speed) being one of them is now half price so I’ll purchase it and leave it on my list of games to get too. I’m working my way through miles morales right now, and playing goldeneye on the side.

I was wondering if KFW matches are pre-recorded now since you aren't launching them from the desk anymore. Makes more sense to do that so you know there's not going to be some technical issue holding up the whole show. As for the AMA, man that show is cursed recently. First Roger and Andy record one that ends up not having sound and now this. It's completely understandable of course, you'll get to it when you can. As for how I handle gaming overload I used to buy everything the day it came out (digitally since the X1 came out the disc basically just became a DRM at this point) and let them sit on my HD or library until I can get to them. I have recently gotten better at only buying the games I want to play ASAP and then putting the rest on my wishlist as I can't tell you how many times I've bought a game full price and then not played it until after the price was reduced. As for the games I'm currently playing? Ugh, it's so many. I have my daily games like Disney Dreamlight Valley, WWE 2K23 (gotta get that MyFaction login) and Marvel Snap. Plus now I've added Disney Speedstorm with it's daily missions. Then there's the newer games I'm playing (Wo Long, Metroid Prime Remaster). Then there's retro games I'm playing (Super Mario 64, Zelda Four Sword Anniversary edition). Then I also started streaming at the beginning of the year so I can schedule dedicated time to certain games I just might not normally make time for or can get lost in an lose more time to than I really want to (that one in particular being No Man's Sky). It really is a lot. Ultimately Jedi Survivor will take over when it comes out. Of course all this is going to get affected as well because as soon as a part I've been waiting for for my car to be fixed (it's been out of commission for 3 months) I am going to have to start returning to office 3 days a week as my company has done so, so that's going to be a whole other layer. Luckily I'm single and have no kids so the only person I have to worry about is myself!! Muahahahahaaahaaahaaaaahaaaaaaaaahsobsobbsobbbbbbb

Hi Greg, Per your request at the end of this Gregway, I wanted to also put my process/prioritization for how/what to play next. Using this snapshot in time as an example: I have Burning Shores downloaded and ready to go, but because of my 8-5, I haven't been able to start it and won't until tomorrow (Friday) evening. And I should be able to get through it before the weekend is out. After that, I'm super hyped for Jedi: Survivor and Redfall and I'll complete the former first before moving on to the latter on weekends/random weeknights when I have some spare free time. I have a month to get through both before the System Shock Remake comes out that I want to give a try, to which I have three weeks to finish that before Final Fantasy XVI on June 22nd. Now, I'm very selective in my games/interests, so I never have cared about getting and playing all the notable games. I don't care about being a part of the zeitgeist/conversations for games I have no affinity for (So no Zelda for me, and the fact it comes out the day before my birthday is a unique bittersweet kind of hilarious). Because of my interests, I haven't played something that has come out in 2023 yet (though I have WATCHED full playthroughs of the Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 Remakes), and looking at my document of games I'm anticipating, everything that has a 2023 timeframe is nebulous: Replaced, CyberPunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, and Spider-Man 2. Granted, the majority I'm looking forward to has no date/very far off, so there's that. Lastly, I make sure to carve out time to watch things like Summer Games Fest and the all but confirmed Playstation Showcase, just in case something gets announced to fill out the rest of my year. By having few interests, it allows me to dedicate completely playing a game fully before moving on to the next. Apologies for the length, but thank you for reading if you do. Have a wonderful day!

Hi Greg, You are doing great, we appreciate all of the work you are putting in, don’t burn yourself out!! For gaming, what I do is prioritise the games that I absolutely want to play myself (tears of the kingdom is on that list), then for other games that I am interested in but might not have time/energy to play myself, I rely on twitch streamers and watch them play as opposed to playing myself. I find it uses less energy as I don’t have to concentrate to the same extent but I still feel like I am experiencing the game and can be involved in the conversation around it…I’ve just watched Andy replay Jedi Fallen Order and will probably watch him or someone else play Jedi Survivor 😊 and sometimes if I’m watching a play through and it looks really good I’ll buy the game and play myself 😊 it works for me!

Since having 2 kids and them getting old enough to have plans outside of school (swimming lessons, sports, etc) I rarely find time to really sink my teeth into the games I want. I get about 2-3 hrs a night if free time which is spending time with my wife, catching up on tv, cooking etc. Last year I bought everything and finished nothing (I’m only a few hours into Ragnorok still). I’ve tried to be a bit more selective this year so am currently playing through Metroid Prime ahead of Zelda. I’m also fairly addicted to Apex Legends which doesn’t help. I wish I had time to play everything.

Also, I know you’re experienced enough to know, but don’t let the stress and pressure consume you man. Lean on the people around you, find time to breath.

Hi Greg, I know I can only play a finite amount of games, only just getting around to Horizon Forbidden West (as I picked up Elden Ring and Horizon fell to the wayside). Sadly I don't have time, money or the capacity to play titles which aren't 'amazing'. The games aren't going anywhere, so there's no real rush to get to them. Hope you enjoy your birthday week and i hopes it gives you the chance to recharge

Hi Greg, I consume my games like this; I almost always have an Arcade game or rogue like downloaded on my PS5, Xbox Series S, or Switch. So these are like my no pressure games I can jump into anytime when I want to play something but don’t know what to play. You know what I mean? Additionally, depending on the platform, I have the one game that is my current hot game. For example, that was recently Death Stranding, Yakuza Like A Dragon, Persona 4, Hi Fi Rush, etc. At least for me, this is a great balance because I hate the pressure to feel like I HAVE to play all the big games. Then when I done with playing those big title games I jump to the next I want to play. As always, thanks for everything!

Hi Greg, I have to dedicate myself to certain games and I’ve made it a rule that I can’t buy a new game until I roll credits on two games I already own,I have to divide my time with work and my Girlfriend

Anonymous

I pretty much only buy story based games and games I'm really excited about and I just bounce between those. For most other games I just watch streams or listen to podcasts while I'm working

Paul smith

I just buy games I know I'm excited for, zero process.which is alot.gaming my passion, I wish I could do what u do as a career.

I usually focus on one or two games at a time - one that I can play in short bursts, and one that is more immersive. I'm so far behind I haven't beaten God of War Ragnarok yet. Working 50 hours a week, taking care of my kids for 40 hours a week, trying to sleep 56 hours a week. 5 hours commuting. That leaves 17 hours a week for chores, errands, eating, showering, and "free time". I stopped buying games because my backlog was so embarrassing.
