I actually was pretty disappointed with this one and was more on the level of "The Good Dinosaur". I liked the art style and anime influences, and liked the uniqueness of the story, but I felt like the message or take-away was a bit jumbled. I got the whole awkwardness of growing up and the panda being an allegory for that, but the overbearing mom parts really confused me because it didn't feel like there was any real resolution or growth. At the end, the mom still represses her panda (aka her emotional range and independence) instead of embracing it. Maybe if the movie had ended with the mom realizing she needed to lighten up (which she admittedly did) but also needed to embrace her panda, I would have tracked it more. Without it, it just felt like the symbolic nature of the panda was lost a bit at the end - like it became more of a plot device and less symbolic.
