Kinda Funny’s Leaving the FCF (Patreon)

Hey, y’all–
Kinda Funny is leaving the Wild Aces and Fan Controlled Football.
If you missed it, last year saw the start of the FCF, a new football league where fans picked their team’s name, designed their team’s logo, and called the plays for the real players on the field. We owned part of a team called the Wild Aces, we won the championship, and we had a great time hanging out with y’all while we watched the games.
In 2022, the FCF announced details for its second season, which included a $40 million raise led by crypto investors and two new NFT teams where fans of those teams would need to purchase NFTs to be part of the action.
Kinda Funny doesn’t fuck with NFTs. NFTs are inarguably bad for the environment and a market that’s rife with issues.
When the Season 2 details were announced, we took some time to talk to FCF leadership and see what the future of the league and their NFT initiative looked like. Although we were told the Wild Aces would have no NFT involvement this season, our conversations with FCF leadership made it clear that NFTs will be a major part of the league’s future.
As such, we’ve decided to leave the league. There’s absolutely no bad blood or drama – we loved our time with the FCF and believe it has every right to take the league in the direction it wants. It’s just not a direction we can follow. As it stands, NFTs are bad, and Kinda Funny doesn’t want to be in business with them.
Now, this leads to what some would refer to as a “slippery slope.” If we don’t want to be in business with NFTs, what does that mean for the future? Ubisoft uses NFTs. McDonalds uses NFTs. The United States freakin’ Postal Service uses NFTs. It’s clear that NFTs aren’t going anywhere and that they can’t be avoided.
What this means for Kinda Funny is that we won’t work with a partner whose core business is NFTs or NFT-related. Half the teams in the FCF and its Season 2 funding is from NFTs/crypto; that crosses the line of what we’re comfortable with in a way Konami’s recent (stupid) NFT activation doesn’t.
Our plan is to still cover/work with these companies while using our voice to remind viewers and listeners of the detrimental effects of NFTs.
This whole thing is a colossal bummer – stem to stern. We loved FCF Season 1, but we don’t feel comfortable supporting NFTs as they stand. As more and more companies work with them and the technology changes, our feelings might too, but for now, this is our path forward. We’re a small business of 11 full time employees trying to navigate a world that’s rapidly changing. Hope you understand, and know we’re always trying to do the right thing.
At least the silver lining of all this is that the Glacier Boyz never beat us.
