Keep in mind that first 18 episodes is just the prologue :D And yeah, you're absolutely right, a lot of people don't like Subaru's character and they end up dropping the show because of it, thus missing the whole point that to Subaru everything still is surreal, he is just a normal kid that, like everybody, has flaws

Dialogues are important in this show, characters characterization, mysteries, lot of details, worldbuilding ,symbolism etc. can be boring for many people, but liking Subaru is a good start.
