'Tis February, when all* the world sings of love. Chocolates and roses and mass produced stuffed animals abound. . .but what about the deeply weird side of love? The type of love that is immortalized in songs like "Where the Wild Roses Grow", "Fairytale of New York", and Lovely Assistant's personal favorite, "I Am Unworthy of Your Love", a beautiful duet between Squeaky Fromme and John Hinckley.

So bring me your love songs - your tired love, your unrequited love, your on the other side of love.

Rules Reminder:

-Three songs

-If it's not on Spotify, provide a link where it can be found

-Any genre, era, artist, style, etc. "Song" can also be loosely interpreted, I have no issue with spoken-word, for example.

-Though we do try to avoid promoting terrible people, everyone understands that sometimes you just love a thing and didn't know the artist was a suppurating dicktoad when we fell in love, and now we're stuck with the beautiful association and don't want to let the dicktoads win. That's fine, just keep it on this side of Butthole Jams: The Bin-Dweller's Collection. Or at least explain why it should come out of the bin!

-If you're wondering if a song you want to include "counts," the answer is always yes.

Don't forget, you can always come and discuss this or any other post, or just hang out, on the Discord server, where we seriously have not had one mean word in all the time it has existed, and all the good parts of the internet exist without the bad. I love you guys so much.

It took me a few days to really put this together, both due to uncertainty and just not finding a good window, but I've decided to stick with my three immediate ideas, from as soon as I saw the prompt. I'm going to hit you all with a bit of a thesis, antithesis, synthesis thing. It was simply a case of working out what order to put these in. 1. "Nothing Matters When We're Dancing" - the Magnetic Fields One of the less weird songs on 69 Love Songs, but I'm making the executive decision that this song is still weird by association. As Wikipedia says, "all the songs deal with love in one form or another, but often in an ironic or off-beat fashion". And isn't it mighty weird that a journey through the world of love songs conjured up a pile of genuine love songs, even if Stephin Merritt apparently didn't intend that? Or maybe not. A lot of love songs have surely been written simply to make some money. Though those would've had feeling put into them too. I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this anymore. https://open.spotify.com/track/7qIHbNBlqMJnID5l66bLN0 2. "Rubber Lover" - Marmaduke Duke "Rubber Lover"! The surprise pop hit from 2009 by the guy in Biffy Clyro and another Scottish man about a man and his sex doll! I still don't know what the Mothman is doing there, but hopefully he's doing all right. https://open.spotify.com/track/31GSUyhLr9Um6DHLXAoSXy 3. "Little Things" - Big Thief The first single from a big album of the year. Truth be told, I've spun this to the point of internal distraction since it came out in August, and now I don't know how good it actually is. Nevertheless, it's been an outsized part of my emotional canvas recently, and I think it's related enough to the prompt on its own merits outside of being one of the first songs that came to mind when I saw it. "Turn in your direction Feeling like I need attention I told you this once or twice Won't you hear? I see you in the yard drinking a beer Leaving me undressed Like some cheap classic movie Maybe I'm a little obsessed Maybe you do use me One step behind you Following you down I was inside of you Kissing your mouth You were inside of me Kissing my mouth Seeing out that needle eye Seeing out that needle eye Seeing out that needle eye" A big little song about the little big things of love. https://open.spotify.com/track/5ZlfX4evbtQtONINsLADDR
