We’re one month into virtual teaching and I hate it. I’m not nervous about it anymore, I’ve got it figured out. I still hate it. I thrive on the interaction with my students and I don’t get much. It’s hard to help the neediest ones. Yet I also wrote the school board that we need to stay virtual. The reality is we don’t have the funds or supplies to safely bring the students back, even in the hybrid format. Teaching in 2020 really is being between a rock & hard place.

In a gig that was already woefully underfunded & under-appreciated, adding all of THIS to the mix is just insult-to-injury time, I can only imagine. Yuck.

I'm scared a lot. We're a high-risk family, especially with Angie's kidney transplant, and I've been mostly unemployed for the six months since sports shut down. I've picked up a few freelance gigs, and there's been a handful of baseball games - covered sitting alone in an unused suite - but I have no idea when my next gig will be. There's a decent chance it will be in 2021. Luckily, Angie is working full time from home, but this has really been tough for both of us. We've left the house together once - we went to the zoo last month on a breezy weekday afternoon. We didn't go into the indoor exhibits, and we stayed masked and avoided everyone else. It was nice, but ... I'm ready for this to be over now. And, of course, because of the fascists planning to steal the election, there's every chance this is going to get worse before it gets better. Communities like this one and Sarah Gailey's and Amal's have been wonderful, though. It is nice to know we're not alone.
