Hey guys,
Hope you’ve all had a great start to the week!

It’s now officially been a week since the dust settled on the final episode of Journey Across Japan: Non-Stop North and I’ve been able to sit down and reflect on the series for the second part of the Patreon Behind the Scenes videos exploring how we produced the show.

First off in case you missed Part 1 which came out halfway through the series, definitely watch that first, where we reveal the logistical aspects of producing the series and outtakes and bloopers from the first few videos.

Journey Across Japan | Do I Regret Daily Videos? 🍿Patreon Exclusive (Part 1)

In Part II, alongside plenty more amusing outtakes and bloopers, I go in-depth on what went wrong (and right) in retrospect, as well as a last minute decision that radically changed the ending of the series (for the better in my view).

Journey Across Japan | Will We Ever Do It Again? ⛩️ Patreon Exclusive (Part 2)

Every project is a learning experience, and we certainly learned an awful lot on this one in what not to do, haha.

With Journey Across Japan out of the way at last, we can start focussing on 2024 and the road ahead, with a few videos currently in the works including the first major documentary of the year - the first in a new series of Patreon funded documentaries to feature on Abroad in Japan this year!

More on that to come, but for now enjoy the epilogue to Journey Across Japan: Non-Stop North 🍻🍻🍻

Best,

Chris

"Joinery Across Japan" is a whole different series! They do have a lot of wooden buildings in Japan so it could definitely work as a series...

David

At least you'd be glad when the dust settles on that series...

Milena

This last JAJ made me want to visit the Tohoku region next time I come to Japan. I know for sure that I will visit Ginzan onsen!

Naryoril

You said you did go to every place on the map. But you skipped Kakunodate due to the horrible weather, didn't you? Also, you always say something like "this was probably/definitely the last JAJ" and then you always make another one anyway ;-) But granted, you have made one in most, if not all, major areas now. As for the long gap of uploads in the middle (maybe for next time): one way around it could have been delaying the previous video. Tohoku is the only area in Japan I haven't been to yet, in large part because I often go towards the end of autumn and the weather in other parts is nicer at that time. This series definitely gave me a bunch of ideas of things to do there. So, thank you very much for all the effort you and your team put into this great series.

This was a great JAJ! That last episode with the old apartment really had me feeling emotional, thank you for sharing that! I can imagine it must have been incredibly strange for you to be there once again.

Denis Looby

Sounds good. Daily challenges where the guests have to make a type of join without losing any appendages. Dr wood glue jelly!

Joshua Mannix

For the production side of things, I think one of the consequences of the fast turn around time was not getting a lot of on the ground "journey" time. In some episodes it was just going from "room" to "room" if that makes sense. Its why my favorite episode was actually the Haunted Inn you and Sharla were at by yourselves. We got to have the whole episode of you two wandering around the area. As for the challenges, I think they are the best when they dont force you guys out of the way but enhance the entertainment of the day. You and Sharla switching accents? Gold. Going to buy stuff from Don Quijote? Eh. Depends on what it is.

Frans van der Pol

“Even the walls taste like grease!” Best line of the series 😂

Peter Varga

stop being too hard on yourself Chris, the series was amazing! I do hope for more JAJ's. I mean to me a JAJ series means spending multiple days going around several locations in an area with some fun friends. that's a cool concept, you should do more of it anyway. and if you're doing it, you can call it anything, might as well be a new JAJ for a warm fuzzy feeling for us long time fans who like to see more of the things that we enjoyed in our youth.

Eric Box

Everything that you film is such a pleasure to watch, Chris! Even the parts you thought shouldn't be included sounded entertaining. Don't let mean comments get you down.

Ellodev

I personally think you/some viewers were too harsh about not having daily uploads, I honestly thougt it was better that way because I didn't have time to watch a episode each day. You and the team did a fantastic job on this Journey across Japan and I enjoyed it a lot!

Fluffyspark7

I really enjoyed the entire series, and so much work you put into it! Can’t wait for what is next!

Markus Dreier

Fantastic, an idea came to my mind with the upcoming Olympics. Have you ever thought about making an episode about Judo/History of the Kodokan? Jigoro Kano had a massive impact with the invention of Judo and it becoming olympic, as well as almost all of the other martial arts, by introducing a new system and way on how to teach martial arts.

Doug Brown

Good work, quite enjoyable - I very much identified places I want to visit next time.

Michael Heuss

It has been a great run. While the daily uploads were certainly wishful thinking, I think the polish was a good thing. Although, to be fair, it felt almost like a series of Wilman Top Gear with a less-offensive Clarkson. Everyone is such a character along with challenges and high-jinks.

Barbara Smith

I loved the episodes, and didn't mind that it wasn't every day. I kinda knew when you announced it, i was like, either they'll be minimally edited (or not at all), or like twitch streaming like Connor does. I think you and the team did a great job with editing/filming and dealing with shitty weather (also Ginza was on my bucket list in the winter to go to...now it's like item number 3 (after going to S. Korea and Canada). I'm looking forward to 2024 and beyond!

Judy Rogin

I loved the series. It didn’t bother me that they weren’t released every day. The episodes with Sharla were so much fun. I laughed a lot. Thank you for the best videos on YT.

Zaine Peacock

Nice little nod to Ryuichi Sakamoto

Alex Bohl

Do journey across Korea! The format is actually great. I like Japan but I’ve kept watching your channel because the friends/presenters that join you. I’ve also liked your slice of life stuff around chess boxing/fitness and hoping you might have some new interests brewing.

Andrew Weston

Really enjoyed the whole series, I loved the Kei car and any scene with you and the guest talking on the road behind the wheel. Maybe more road trip style videos showing the journey, not just the destination could be cool. BTW any chance of releasing the deleted Pete scenes in full?

Chelsea Anderson

You’re far too hard on yourself Chris, in a series this big there are bound to be weaker episodes and that’s okay. Overall the series was brilliant, you should be proud 😊 can’t wait to see what’s next.

Soph

You need a holiday Chris! It was a very enjoyable series. As for the critics, people will always have opinions but what really matters is that you discovered a lot about yourself and the process during this trip and you'll be able to use that going forward. That said, feel proud of the job you and the team did as you delivered another great series and in record time! Hope you have some well deserved downtime planned for the next few weeks.

Johanne Almoza

In my opinion, this last JAJ was the perfect bow on the JAJ series, it felt like a perfect full circle. Starting a new format or series without the boundaries of the challenges, Dr. jelly and other tropes would allow your creativity to shine and satisfy the appetite of your old and new viewers. Retire it on a high note! My only exception to my comment would be if you took that journey across format to another country…

Katherine Donaldson

I think this was a great JAJ. I’ve been here forever, and I certainly don’t mind your revisiting locations. I do think you could drop some of the challenges, and skip places you aren’t really into (because it shows). I think the only video of yours I’ve ever been disappointed in was when you went to that vending machine/tire store location with Connor and ate everything awful, because it truly has a unique story and person behind it, but you guys only did a really shallow take. But, maybe that was Connor’s video 🙃. Usually your sarcastic Brit act is moderated by your genuine interest shining through. As you revisit places that you feel you didn’t do justice to the first time, I would find it really interesting to have more tiny interviews with locals. When you do that it feels like we get to go deeper than the English language tour books that tend to recycle the same generic information and photos.

MikeTheGamerGuy

I loved the challenges and wasn't at all bothered by the lack of daily uploads. I feel like some of what made this series feel so special you also don't really like about it which is too bad.

mayurin

many thanks for this jaj! you and the team made my holidays much cosier 🤍

Lisa Pond

よく出来ました! Loved every episode. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
