The first Abroad in Japan Stories is now available to view, exclusive to Patreon supporters.

It's a story I haven't told in all my four years that I've been producing Youtube content - about what led me to move to Japan.

The reason I've never talked about it before is it's quite a personal story and the Abroad in Japan channel is supposed to be a resource about Japan, not specifically about me.

Along the way you can expect the best animations of airplanes and coaches you'll ever see, exotic shots of the Tokyo skyline, beautiful artwork and of course, Phil Collins.

Thank you for sharing! Your videos keep me motivated to save the money I need to move to Japan as an English teacher and pursue my dreams daily. I really needed this right now so I can't thank you enough. Your success is so inspiring to me and keeps me pushing forward to achieve the life I want in Japan.

Such a great video! It was really imteresting to hear what was really going through your head back before you went to Japan! Seriously inspirational! You make me want to follow in your footsteps Chris, and I can't thank you enough for that :)

I'm moving back to my university campus today in a little over an hour and a halfs time after waking up at the ungodly hour of six in the morning and as corny as it sounds, for me this was such an absolute perfect way to kick start my new year at university it's spooky. I'm going into my third year of a four year course and find it mind numbingly dull (Studying rocks and plants) and honestly I was dreading it slightly. However watching this video has reminded me the reason I went to university in the first place and my own plans for the future and that uni won't last forever. It's just a matter of toughing through it and looking forward to what comes after. Can't begin to describe how glad I am now that I hit that subscribe button way back in 2012/13 or whenever it was.

By far the most inspirational video I have ever seen in my life. Thank you Chris.

Interesting enough, your videos partially contributed to me saying, “Fuck it, I'll get a degree in Film and Broadcast” and that's what I've been slaving away at for the past two years. It's a coincidence and somewhat ironic that your decision to change directions from a degree in Film inspired me (albeit indirectly) to pursue a career in Film.

Wew, wanting to do Film Degree, taking gap year out to do adventurous things but only to be facing excel sheets 5 days a week, for a year? That sounds like the exact same thing happened to me. But that was a pretty big leap to take, from being sold the JET program by two parents to then taking it head on and doing so. But it has got me thinking about my future little bit. Thanks for this Chris!

Being a successful entrepreneur is an admirable goal, but I suspect you wouldn’t be as happier, now knowing the positive affect your current path has had on so many people.

I love your story. Thanks for telling it. I have a friend that lives abroad and his story is very similar. Change out plane for bar and change out touring couple talking about their daughter for Retired JAG officer talking about himself. It's amazing how meeting some stranger can change your life forever. Well, thanks again, now back to the spreadsheets for me.

I am watching this tomorrow, but I had another comment so I am sticking it here: I am reconsidering what I said when you asked what we would like to see. I don’t really care. If you want to be Abroadin Weston-super-Mare, I would probably still watch your channel as long as you don’t read this on “Stupid/Annoying Comments,” share your skin care routine, and avoid saying “legit,” giving the “V” sign,” and talking about Pokemon Go. Countries are the star of the show on some channels, but I don’t think that is true of yours. I watch because I enjoy listening to you and I like the non-YouTube collaborators you found for yourself -Natsuki and Ryotaro, of course. Good rapport, lots of laughing.

Thank you very much for sharing your story! I so wish I had realized my dream of moving to Japan temporarily earlier in my life. I'm now in my 30s with responsibilities with two associate degrees but not a bachelors so no work visa for me. :( But I am very inspired by your video and hope I can visit at least for a few weeks in the future.

Cheers for the video dude. If I like Japan when I visit next year might consider a job there.

That was some good content

Do you have any Japanese ancestry? You look like you do.

Oh my god Phil Collins rules, ok.

I'm glad you posted this - I've always been curious what brought you to Japan (and I was under the impression you were just staying there for temp, until strings of jobs ran dry or your visa expired and you had to return to England). And hey, it looks like that filming education WAS of some use after all!

Thanks for sharing Chris. I think a lot of people can relate to stories like this. I went through something similar when I left school. Also - how did you get that great skyline shot at the end? Was it from a train?

Thanks for sharing :D I heard in another video that you talked to those people in the plane and then decided to go to Japan. And I thought "Wow, crazy, he moved to Japan not knowing anything about the country" :D I liked this idea. But I also like the true story. It's great to see that your dream became true to be your own boss and work on things you like :)

This video convinced me to become a Patreon of yours. I'm British, so you know I'm cheap therefore you must understand how good your stuff is to make me part with the second tier ($5) cost. ;) Your vids give me some life changing ideas and also helped me a lot when I visited Japan for the first time back in May. Also you have been a great source of help to me when picking up where I left off with my Japanese lessons and into "pro" self study. Bought all the books you recommended. Also thank you so much for recommending "Kekkon dekinai otoko", which led me to my new favorite series called "Trick" co-staring "Hiroshi Abe". Thanks Chris.
