This week has been a challenge.
A frustrating, stressful, wall-banging challenge.

I wish I could tell you that the best things require little effort. But the truth is every major project we’ve done on Abroad in Japan has come with its fair share of frustration.

You just have to hope that it’s all worth it.

“Sure…but what the hell are you talking about?” You might be wondering. Especially if you've seen me cryptically ranting on Twitter in recent days.

(And no, surprisingly my week from hell has nothing to do with Connor either).

Two weeks ago after a lengthy edit locked in a room for eternity, to great celebration, I finished work on the Ken Watanabe documentary and promptly came on here to make a song and dance about it.

Little did I know the worst part had yet to begin.

Because Japan has the most antiquated copyright laws in the known universe, every screenshot from Ken’s films - every image - requires submissions to be made to every relevant film company. Something I didn’t particularly anticipate, because usually you can get away with fair use on Youtube. And even then, I didn’t use any clips from his films, just mere images.

But unfortunately, because it’s Japan, we’ve needed to do it.
That’s meant contacting everyone from Warner Bros and Toho, to the Lincoln Theatre in New York to use the desired images, that I felt were necessary to tell Ken’s backstory.

Sadly, it’s been far more difficult than I’d anticipated, hence why the documentary still isn’t out. When I should be out filming videos, I’m trying to convince Warner Bros to let us use an image from the Last Samurai. (Currently, they’re saying no).

We’ve found some ways around it - for example Ken has appeared in quite a few Samurai dramas on Japanese TV and we’ve been able to license images from NHK (at great cost), so we can at least show images from his performances. And the Lincoln Theatre were very kind indeed.

There’s also been some final issues on getting the green light from certain other parties and hidden costs popping up. All in all, it’s been a real headache, though of course it’s not Ken’s fault. It’s part of the stress of working on a documentary rather than just a humble Youtube video.

Honestly, many of the best Abroad in Japan videos and projects have been born out of stress and challenges (the original Journey Across Japan or Hyde documentary springs to mind) and when this eventually goes up - fingers crossed in late February - it’ll all have been worth it.

Often when you’ve completed a project, a lot of the suffering and nightmares you went through to get there melt away and you’re left with something special.

But the whole ordeal has temporarily drained the life out of me and I’m only just finding my feet again, so apologies for my absence these last week or so guys.

NOW on to more positive news...

⛩️NEW VIDEO! Feat. CDawgVa ⛩️

In between shooting a new episode of Wacky Weekend this week, Connor popped into the Abroad in Japan studio this week where we shot a sequel to our episode talking about Overrated things in Japan.

This time we’re talking UNDERRATED foods, places and things. We’re also exposed to Connor’s questionable presenting skills when he struggles to say the phrase “Lobster Roll”. Brace yourselves.

BRAND NEW CHANNEL | Abroad in Japan Clips

I noticed in recent times that tons of channels have been pinching Abroad in Japan clips and uploading them on to Youtube where thousands of people are watching them. Honestly, I’ve never minded as it’s extra publicity, but it made sense to have an Official Abroad in Japan Clips channel where we can share the highlights and moments that’ve defined this crazy 10 year journey.

As well as clips, it’s also a great space where I can share moments (say if I whip out my camera and film something there and then), that I’ve been unable to do on the other two channels.

Case in point, today saw the release of a rant from a live show where I hypothesised about how awful the Abroad in Japan tour of Japan would be (a tour that’s been worrying well received).

Why I'm Japan's WORST Ever Tour Guide

And don’t worry this isn’t going to be an outlet where we share Patreon exclusive content. On the contrary, I hope Abroad in Japan Clips will promote this Patreon community better going forward - something I’ve been dreadful at over the years.

🇯🇵 JAPAN RE-OPENING & LEARNING JAPANESE from Day One 🇯🇵

Finally I’ve had a quite a few folks ask me about learning Japanese from scratch recently. I think as it’s still February and people like to embark on challenges in the opening months of the new year (before enthusiasm for life runs out by April).

Recently I’ve been giving advice to the Abroad in Japan editor (Dave), as he’s hoping to visit Japan this year when the doors finally burst open, and he wants to arrive here knowing how to order at a restaurant and introduce himself at the very least.

Essentially, I’ve just told him to download the app Human Japanese and go from there, as I did almost 10 years ago. To date, it remains the greatest app or learning software I’ve ever bought and I’ve not encountered anything half as fun or educational.
https://www.humanjapanese.com/

There’s also Intermediate Human Japanese one you’re completed the first one. Beyond that I’d recommend the Genki Textbooks as well.

But Abroad in Japan is one of the most comprehensive resources on learning Japanese from Day One on the internet, and I recommend checking out this playlist if you’re just embarking on that lengthy, but incredibly rewarding journey!

For now guys, enjoy the videos and if you’re wondering where I’m typing this from here’s a photo! It’s still trippy as hell sitting in the Abroad in Japan studio.

Despite this week from hell, I'm incredibly grateful for the most part and I still can’t believe this is a thing.

We appreciate your good fight, Chris! Keep up the amazing work. People need you and your amazing content in times like these.

garrett1433

I'm sending positive vibes for you Chris, make sure to not burn yourself out!

Anonymous

As soon as you'd mentioned Warner Bros my heart sank for you, I used to work for them, there's almost no chance they'll budge 😑

Anonymous

Sucks with all the copyright rules in Japan, hopefully you get it worked out, looking forward to the Ken Watanabe documentary!

Anonymous

Can’t wait for your next documentary. You’re one of my favorite presenters out there.

Anonymous

What does Sharla think about the studio?

Camilla Fontana

I cannot even imagine the headaches this documentary is causing, Japan law's are absurd, but I'm sure you'll come out on top, and I cannot wait to see what you have accomplished!

Anonymous

Thank you for everything that you do! No challenge is too great for you to overcome with your hard work and dedication to your channel and viewers. I know that my household is rooting for you and that your fans are here for support! Hang in there, Chris. I’ve also had a rough two weeks and I’ve found myself reevaluating all of the obligations I’ve committed to. I’ve just been taking it one day at a time and keeping a goal checklist for focus. If only someone could reward me a gold star for every task I complete, then I would have motivation! 🙃

Jake

Japanese language related stuff would definitely be awesome if you dived into more, Japan is great but the language holds a special place in my heart (and I hope others as well). I've watched your language playlist a couple times now for "fun"

Anonymous

Sending positive thoughts for a quick resolution to your copyright woes! Luckily, Ken has had such a great career, you're sure to find something to highlight it! Looking forward to it!

abroadinjapan

It was certainly a disappointment! Still, we won't let it get in the way of an otherwise awesome documentary!

Anonymous

Sending good vibes your way, Chris. You are a trooper! Thank you for taking on all these challenges. Your content is always amazing, and your rants are no different. I love everything you produce, and I hate that you are having a hard time with this documentary. But I believe it's worth it! I can't wait to see it. Take all the time you need. 💕

Hang in there, Chris! You’re doing a great job. Remember, “experience is the comb nature gives us when we’re bald”

Anonymous

I'm looking forward to seeing the ken watanabe documentary but also your appearance on ironmouse's stream. Keep up the good work

Anonymous

Gambare Chris! What a nightmare. But don't feel pressure about not releasing the documentary yet, take time to release it when you're really happy with what you've been able to create!

Anonymous

Looking forward to the doc, whenever it may come out. Don't worry, we will all still watch it. In the meantime, you can truly speak your mind about Connor on Speak of the Devil tomorrow with Ironmouse.

Anonymous

Dont worry about it, its ready when its ready!

I can definitely attest that the biggest and best projects are always the most difficult. So many times I've worked on my favorite art projects, only to constantly hit problems and want to bang my own head against the walls (and sometimes literally did). That being said, those projects that we put all that extra time and effort into, always turn out amazing and worth the struggle. I hope that the frustration you're dealing with ends swiftly so you can sit back and actually get to enjoy the relief and satisfaction. Because we know it'll be absolutely amazing.~ Good luck!

Landot

Sorry to hear the troubles plaguing the documentary, but you've always put out fantastic content, so I trust your judgement! Just make sure to keep yourself as OK as you can, it's a bit harder to make content when you've rammed your head through a wall from the BS I imagine :P As for learning Japanese content, I'd enjoy seeing it! Not only does it give another avenue to learn from (Been going through Human Japanese as well, thanks for that one!), but it keeps me engaged in learning it in general. Best wishes to you and the crew!

Crap...I hope you will recover soon. Treat yourself afterwards 🌆🛀🧋🥡🎮📻💜

Keep up the great work Chris and make sure you get rest! I know that WB can be useless at times (used to work for them) but I'm sure you'll figure out a solution in the end

MK

So grateful and many thanks to you and your team for giving us literally the best content on the net. Hope the copyright "Gods" release you from this hell soon!

Peter Varga

Go Chris!! let us know if we can send a few $$ for the copyright costs!

Anonymous

You go Chris! You're doing an awesome job!

Mr Fujisawa

That sounds like a right ball ache Chris, but you're right. The best things can come out of these kinds of situations and I'm sure the final video is gonna be awesome!

smeeth

Which is worse - antiquated copyright laws or hanko stamps?

Anonymous

Having also (indirectly) dealt with Warner Bros legal team, they are notoriously strict and horrible. 😒 But I'm looking forward to the documentary in whatever final form it takes because I know it's going to be good. Thanks for all your tremendous effort Chris! 💙

Anonymous

Thank you for everything that you do! You've got this Chris!

Claire

Would you have to get the same permissions for illustrated versions of the same screenshots?

Anonymous

Be like the viral Japanese fisherman and Never Give Up! I know how frustrating it must be but your fans are willing to wait so you do what you have to do with all of us cheering you on. Your videos have brought me a lot of joy during this miserable time and I hope all your effort pays off!!

Anonymous

Hey Chris! Sorry that the Ken Watanabe documentary has been such an ordeal. Japan really is backwards in some ways that’s for sure. All you’re trying to do is make a documentary. A shame that things have been so rough. Keep up the more lighthearted videos! Take care of your mental health and I would honestly be happy if you made an announcement that you were taking time off from the channel. You deserve a long break if it’s at all possible. Best!

Anonymous

That's what I thinking, commission an artist to draw up representations of Ken's work that would fit in the Abroad's channel aesthetics. They don't even need to be screenshots, just representations.

LordLiquidBaconII

I don't know if that is ok in Japan since Toei Animation took down TotallyNotMark videos and some were drawings that were not done by Toei in anyway.

Rynnik Elddi

Joey The Anime Man did comment on one of his videos earlier that Japan is rather quite backwards when it comes to copyright laws. They've got not Fair Use laws whatsoever, and many of their copyright owners are still stuck in the old ways and are resistant to change, and have been zealously abusing DMCAs to clamp down on many anime YouTubers for using even just a single cropped screenshot.

Rynnik Elddi

If you still can't get Warner Bros. to agree to let you use a screenshot or photo from The Last Samurai, maybe one of us who's talented in drawing could help draw illustrations of which screenshots you which to use, in which you can use those hand-drawn illustrations in lieu of screenshots? And if you must include the title of the movie in the illustration, alter the spelling a bit so that Copyright Lawyers can't touch you (e.g. call it "The Fast Samurai" or something)

Eric

It's probably too late now but might I make a suggestion for future documentaries that include copyrighted material... Send the finished video to someone you trust in the UK (or USA), invite them (via Gmail) to help 'manage' your channel, let them post the video on your behalf, then you can remove them from channel management and then make the video live, that way it's been posted 'from the UK' and because YouTube channels are not distinctly based in one location it (should) only matters where you have uploaded the content from. Yes it's a bit underhanded, but you have to think of yourself, not all this Samurai syndrome respect crap. YouTube certainly doesn't care... But it's not a legal issue for other videos or future videos on your YouTube channel, because the fact that you are physically based in Japan makes no difference, as there are plenty of channels that have vloggers posting from multiple countries. As long as you don't post from "within Japan" you should technically be fine. Even if you left the country into a more CR friendly nation (now borders are being lifted) and posted the video, there should be no problem... My brother-in-law is a video producer in Australia with his own studio and worked with multimillion-dollar clients I'm sure he would be willing to help you out if needed. He's a very genuine person. Actually maybe I should tell him about your channel now it's getting so cinematically polished! (As obvious as it may seem; this should not constitute legal advice. but it's a high probability that if you did post from 'Abroad' you would be absolutely fine) Randomly, and in case you're unaware, it's extremely windy here in the UK today, speeds up to 70 mph!

Eric

Or I suppose you could have a talent or media management agency in the UK upload it for you. I'm pretty sure that would still be under the radar. Hopefully you can get it listed on Amazon like that cat documentary, and then you can include the version with copyrighted content especially if you ask for Amazon's help... With Ken in I'm sure you'd get tens of millions of views. Every time you post something amazing like this, it just reminds me, I'm in I.T. but I NEED to get back into filmmaking and cinematography I miss it and I.T. is not really a creative industry... Even just making apps for internal use isn't enough, need something more! Anyway, good luck!

Hi Chris! When Japan’s borders open up again and you’ll be able to travel, would you consider doing a series of Wacky Weekend episodes in other countries with ConnorDawgVoiceActor or a Journey Across (insert country) series with the Animation Man and Natsuki? Would you also create a new channel for your travels or would you change your channel name to something else? Or would you put them on your second channel instead?

Anonymous

Honestly I don't mind waiting as your documentaries are my favorite thing on your channel (my two big favs being Hyde and Inside Fukushima). Sorry to hear you are experiencing licensing hell though. Eagerly awaiting its release and will continue to enjoy seeing you bully Connor in the meantime. ;)

Pat

I just imagined a wacky weekend in a particular hotel in my city that I hate. I've seen multiple friends stay there and every room has been so bad that I would actually love to see them react to it
