Hey guys,

So by now you’ll have probably heard the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed to 2021 (though they plan to keep the ‘2020’ title). Let’s face it, at this point I don’t think any of us are surprised - or even particularly care - given how every country in the developed world is scrambling to tackle the crisis. I’m far more worried about friends and relatives scattered across the UK and North America right now.

Meanwhile life in Japan continues to go on pretty normally (somehow), though there’s anticipation that there’ll be an outbreak in the next week or two and talk of Tokyo being potentially locked down.

Just yesterday I was chatting to Ryotaro and I asked him if he knew anyone that had caught it so far. He said he didn’t, however he pointed out that none of his friends would ever tell anyone, due to the social stigma of appearing to be ill.

Japan’s lack of testing remains at the root of the problem, though the country has world-leading pneumonia treatment which is said to have ensured people with more serious symptoms are able to recover.

I daren’t make any predictions; all I know is my plans for April are to stay indoors as much as possible. The good news is the situation won’t affect the weekly podcasts or (almost) weekly videos - though the focus for the next few weeks will be making videos like the good old days - just sitting in my apartment discussing a range of topics and throwing in as many comedic sketches as I can. I think the world needs as much escapism as it can get right now and to be honest, people seem to enjoy these style of videos more anyway!

For example, this week’s release is a rare Q&A video - the first “AskAbroad” episode on the Abroad in Japan channel in several years! I sifted through almost 2,000 questions for this video alone, as well as unearthed some good-old-fashioned hate comments for the show, so it should be fun for the whole family.

This was one of the more bizarre pieces of mail I received; it's either a hilarious scam or a tale of unspeakable tragedy.

I won't lie, I think it's the former, but I'll let you be the judge.

Now on to the main event!

Last week hundreds of you voted for this week’s video and the results are in - this month’s video is going to be “6 Amateur Vlogger Mistakes | Creating a Youtube Channel” - hopefully it’ll be useful to those of you considering setting up a Youtube channel as a hobby or career, or just interesting to hear about the production process of creating a video.

And next month, you’ll decide the next video in the series.

Finally if you're looking for an additional escape and you've got some spare time, why not go on a 7 hour 2,000km virtual trip across Japan by watching all of Journey Across Japan.

By the end of the trip, you'll feel like you too have gone along for the never-ending cycle of despair.

As always if you have any follow up questions on the video, the Olympics, or metal detectors, I’ll be waiting in the comments section - coffee in hand.

Also don’t forget, I’m always available to message on Patreon if you need to get in touch - I try to respond to everyone within 1-2 days!

For now though guys, stay safe - wishing you all the best at this tough time.
Let's chat again in the next few days.

Nice tips Chris! I hope you have a great week. Here in Italy the coronavirus conundrum has reached its high toll of infections and we expect a decrease in the coming weeks. Thanks for your encouragement. All the best.

thanks for the info Chris. Me and my Wife had planned to move to Japan in June where she would start our youtube channel and I would go to work as a game dev. Unfortunately those plans, much like the olympics, are now postponed until this all blows over. The info in this video is extremely useful and I really appreciate you giving these out. Thanks again. Chris.

hmm. He was oddly specific in his request and he did not ask for money, so perhaps its legit. Then again, that thing is expensive and he might just sell it and keep the money. I guess we will never know :( Anyway, this is a bit off topic but here is an idea for your merch: JaJ tshirts :) you can ask people around if they would be interested (i know i would be)

If my house burnt down my first reaction would certainly be to contact a stranger online and beg them to replace my metal detector, anything else would be WEIRD.

I can't even imagine what it's like over there. Hang in there, I hope things really do calm down in the coming weeks.

Probably been asked many times before but have you ever experienced camera shyness? I've been trying to start an art channel but as soon as I press record I clam up. Also, on the metal detector front, maybe he needs a metal detector to detect his metal detector that was lost when his house got burnt.

I'm still wasting my vote on number 3. Sorry not sorry... hehehe...

Lol I’m not even close to being in your demographic.

I did watch the entire journey across japan a few weeks ago, but sadly you cutted out the last guest... (Still really want to watch it, even if it's not that good)

I find I have two common problems; the first is imposter syndrome, where you often feel like "what the heck am I doing? I'm not important enough to film myself and stick it online." I think it's quite common with Youtubers, given you make the videos in an isolated space - often quite disconnected from viewers. So it can feel a bit odd at times, and shyness can certainly creep in. The way I get around it is to always have a rough idea what I want to say on camera before I hit record, so I'm not just winging it. I also try to get into a bit of a persona and separate my onscreen self from my real life self - that helps more than anything. Highly recommend it! The second problem is I'm just not in the right mood to perform on camera; it takes a lot of energy to do and if you haven't slept well, or you're in a bad mood it's a nightmare to do it. The only way around that is to drink lots of coffee and watch a sitcom before you hit record!

Sorry to hear that Chris; the only upside I can think of is that it'll give you both more time to prepare. Hopefully you guys can take advantage of the time until then to study some more Japanese and plan the move. If there's anything I can help with don't hesitate to drop me a line!

I'm always shocked that people have the cheek to ask strangers to send them money or things (unless it's a posted giveaway). You see a lot of this in the comments on all platforms.

Also being stuck at home I was watching a few of those "urban explorer" type videos where they explore abandoned places, and I had to stop watching because I got motion sickness from the poor camera work. I'm sure that the frantic pace is driven to certain extent by the fear of being discovered. But slowing down a bit and taking the time to focus and actually show the things that you're talking about would improve the videos immeasurably. AND I would have actually watched the entire video instead of needing to go for a lie down!

I’ve been watching your channel for years and I never realized the title is a PUN smdh. Great tips though, not just strictly for vlogging, but for content creation in general!

My husband sometimes watches this youtube channel of several young men walking in abandoned places around the world; each video is ~40 min long without any semblance of a storyline, full of random bits of conversations, "ooh"s and "aah"s, terrible camera work, and drone shots. They aggravate me so much! I wonder if the previous commenter was talking about the same channel 😂
