Hey guys!

I hope you've had a great start to the week so far.

So in this week's vlog I touch upon the subject of the recent demonetisation of many Abroad in Japan videos and discuss what this could mean for Youtube as a whole.

Against this depressing backdrop, there is some good news! We've seen 100 new awesome people supporting Abroad in Japan on Patreon this week alone and the future is looking brighter than ever for the channel.

With that in mind, I've posted the full megalist of around 30 bonus articles and videos of exclusive Patreon content so far, for new supporters to dive into!  New supporters often miss it; so instead of having to scroll endlessly down the 'Patreon posts' page, you can conveniently find the full list below!

Whether you're travelling to Japan and looking for ideas on where to go, considering starting a Youtube channel yourself, or wondering who I am and why the hell I came to Japan, hopefully there's something for everyone below. Read, watch, listen, enjoy. There'll be tons more exclusive content in the coming weeks and months! A huge thanks to everyone for your support!!

Did the bears eat Mr. Snuggles? I'm not a cat person but he is missed from over your left shoulder where he is usually perched on the couch.

Yay to your own website! I also cannot wait to see the merch website, I already want the Sake shirt and the Natsuki one ;_; I do want the Natsuki riding a zebra with the slogan "Like a Zoo" on it though.. PLZ CHRIS MAKE IT HAPPEN. And you should also add another reward tier so people can donate more money per month and maybe get a piece of merch as the reward such as the notebook or something, and then you have that extra income of people wanting to support you because we do want to support you to keep the content real, and obviously sarcastic.

I started watching your videos in February when i decided to move to Japan for a year. And I have been enjoying them very much! Thank you for that. I joined patreon because of your posts about the demonetization, because you should be getting money out of your hard work. And I love the sarcastic way you do your videos, it would be a shame to change that just so you could still have the advertisement in the videos. Even if it just a little bit per person. I really like Kim Bridsons idea about the merch as a reward for joining. That could really work!

Sorry to hear about your videos! I love the music playlist, you shared one before some months ago and I played it over and over. Makes me feel super happy and gives me the energy to do work or study while having a little dance. :) Thank you for sharing it!

That Vine compilation was gold. Would you consider joining Snapchat? Even weekly Snaps from you would be such a treat!

Anonymous

Yeah, maybe at least an in-between of $10-$15 a month?

why doesn't YT have a rating system like movies or games - creators can rate their videos (and get flagged by users for incorrect ratings), add some rating tags like "swearing" "tobacco use" or whatever else, and then advertisers can check off what ratings & rating tags they're ok with running ads on? Also - Like a Magic notebook. YES. Is it college-ruled?

By website do you mean u are bringing your old abroadinjapan.com website back from the dead or are you getting another url for it?

Regarding Kyoto being overrated, I'd half tend to agree. The shrines and temples are lovely, and cannot be blamed for the throngs of people who wish to see them. However, so many people do and it detracts from the enjoyment I would otherwise have had while gazing upon the architecture of the structures, my primary pastime while there. But I am with you when it comes to reconstructions - none were on my list last visit, nor will I see any this coming October. I want to enjoy history and true craftsmanship, not buildings erected with modern tools and electricity. I agree also that the stroll down the Philosopher's Path was one of the highlights of my last trip, as was Fushimi Inari, although I only went about half-way up then veered off to wander through the trees to feed crows and toss stones into the nearby swamp. I enjoyed Ginkakuji until the dozens of school buses arrived, but it was also adorable for all the students to pass me with bright smiles and practically yell, "ohayo gozaimasu!" as rapidly as "Good Morning!" as if eager to practice a bit of English.

Re: Racism in Japan, I did experience a genuine moment of racism straight out of 1960s America. My friend in I were just north of Ueno, having exited at Uguisudani Station and headed into Taito. A restaurant was still closed, so we waited 20 minutes for it to open. We were the only ones there when their doors opened. The waitress took a long look at us then promptly took us up the stairs and put us in the corner of the smoking section, which was all of three tables, the entire second floor. Neither my friend nor I smoke. The ground floor had over a dozen tables. Empty ones. I'm sure this wouldn't have happened had we not been foreigners.

If your appeal goes through and youtube puts advertising on your most recent North Korean video let us know, I'd be willing to watch it again so that you get advertising revenue :)

I'm so excited for this merch!

I'm happy to now be part of this lovely Abroad in Japan community, Hello all :-) . Out of interest Could anyone tell me what the music is at the end of the YouTube videos? ,I love it ❤. Im planning my first trip to Japan & stumbled across the Abroad in Japan videos earlier this year , I've been hooked ever since !

Never give up, Chris. Even when the world is trying to hold you down, your Patreon supporters will be there to keep you going. And one day, you'll be able to buy all the chairs you desire.

You've got my subscription! I've always wanted to go to Japan, so I live vicariously through your channel lol. YouTube was how I found your channel, which is an awesome startup, but totally do your own site! Best of luck, and thanks for the video!

That 80's groove is fantastic. I'm looking around for big hair and blazers. I think your NK video was tastefully done, not too serious and not too humorous. Also, we'd be interested in knowing your thoughts on the future of your channel and brand-- because it is indeed becoming a brand-- you know, all your hopes and dreams, etc etc.

I'm very into 80's music (especially British) so this video was a jackpot. Sooo good!!

Can't wait for a F Sake t-shirt or Like a Magic merch. Never in my life thought i'd be buying merch off a youtuber but your stuff looks awesome. It's not like others that's just a name tag or tiny logo, they're fun, interesting and creative and relevent to the channel. Can't wait for them to come out!!

Would be good if you would say again a bit into traveling around. I have heard things like that surprisingly there is not many wifi spots around in Japan. Is this true?

Peter Yule

I feel you pain, I have seen a lot of people I follow on YT come close to the breadline due to this and the last event at the start of the year were revenues dropped and didn't recover as the year rolled in. May be you want to flesh out Patreon options to give more option for interested patrons, might be a pain and time consuming I know. But I've seen some interesting options from Only in Japan's Pateron levels where higher packages involve physical gifts being sent to the patrons. Anyway just an idea friend, cheers Peter, Edinburgh

Firstly: in love with the music. Tokyo in the 80s...why don't we have time machines?! Secondly: love the look of the merchandise! Thirdly: love you and your videos! Don't ever change! ❤️ You have our support and hopefully YouTube will calm it's ass down.

Thank you for the music recommendation, please keep them coming! Also looking forward to getting some merch (That Like A Magic design is great!)

Great Music man, I am sticking around to see this great content you produce. I always look forward to your sarcasm!

Anonymous

Please let me know if I can add some of my Natsuki Fan Club merch to the tiers (once it's ready). I want to help in any way I can.

Joined last week. Thanks for all the links!

I see an ad on the video now, so it seems to be resolved. I hope it stays this way, also for future videos, and from the beginning. — Anyway, I am here to see when the store goes online!1!!

Thank you very much for compiling the links in a single post. I'll definitely be binging.

Jonathan Lam

Just wondering, on demonetized videos do you still get stuff from YouTube red users?

Hey Chris, If you like Japanese Funk, do you know Osaka Monaurail? (Yes, Monaurail ;) ) I've seen them a couple of times even here in good old Hamburg, Germany, and gosh, they're jolly good fun! :) Thanks for all your efforts and bringing a little bit of Japan to me until I find time (and money) to finally come back to this pretty crazy country. Even though I have already lived there myself for a year, I have so many more ideas what to see next when travelling again! 有難う!
