Backfires are a common practice for fighting forest fires and when forest rangers do control burns to maintain forests. It works by creating a second fire and directing it towards the first and when the two meet they die out due to the second fire already burning and using up the trees that the first fire needed to continue burning in that direction. It does seem backwards when you first hear about it but makes more sense if you actually see how it works.
