Also, regarding the whole “we are the bad guys” mindset, correction: “we are smart bad guys”. Because one of the things I love about Ainz (bone daddy) is that he quite genre savvy, in that he doesn’t fall into/abide by the usual evil overlord cliche and tropes. He’s reasonable, not needlessly cruel or tyrannical, and rarely, if ever callous. And while Ainz’s wish to make the fledgling Sorcerer Kingdom a Utopia sounds good on the surface, Maruyama typical brand of existential horror begins to creep in when you stop to consider the words and phrasing of Ainz’s declaration to the maid Fith very carefully: “Then, let us create a utopia. A world as sweet as honey. A world where the people wish to forever be under my rule. Not only the humans, I will have all the humanoid and non-humanoid races bow before me. Let the world know. Eternal prosperity can only be found under the rule of the Sorcerer Kingdom!” Like, there’s a reason why Albedo and Demiurge see this desire of Ainz’s as him wanting to have/create a private zoo for himself, because that’s what the Sorcerer Kingdom is in practice/execution. A humane, (more or less) ethical, and well kept/maintained zoo, but a zoo nonetheless. Because all will have to live with the reality that these beings, their new masters/rulers can snuff them and everyone/everything that they hold dear on a whim, will merely a simple gesture…
