You realize the point of that first episode was that Arrested Development really wasn't doing well in the ratings and they were trying to appeal to viewers to convince their friends and families to watch, appeal to advertisers to keep the show going? (In a funny, tongue-in-cheek way.) Arrested Development was always kinda struggling to get enough of an audience to not get cancelled. Just like Community.

Yeah the celebrity guest stars, the 3D, the live ending, the character death, were all making fun of some of the gimmicks that other tv shows were using at the time to increase ratings. And then the HBO and Showtime mentions were references to rumors that another network might continue the show if it did get cancelled.

2023-11-25 03:41:40 Elsbeth Tascioni is one of my favorite characters on TV, period. I never realized that was her in this so thank you for that . Loved her in True Blood as well . The reason you thought the first episode was weird was because it was a very meta episode . There was a lot of talk of the show being cancelled and the fan base tried to rally support and the show played into that.
