I remember having a similar experience with this show as I did with "Party Down": I saw a commercial/trailer for it several months before it was going to air, thought it looked great, then heard nothing about it for a year or so and completely forgot about it, then remembered it because I found out (somehow) that the entire first season had already aired in its entirety. I remember liking it but I just lost momentum with it. When it ended I was really interested in season 2, but it took so long that by the time it came out, most of my excitement was sapped. I tried to watch it (season 2) but wasn't in the mood at the time so didn't get more than a few minutes in. Haven't returned to it since. (Topher suggested it? If you read this: did you watch 2? Did you like it? More, about the same, less but still liked it? Would you want Ana to watch season 2?) I definitely see a through-line between this and Banshee: both are show I can objectively say are very good, brutal... dark humor, more amusing than funny, neither have characters I find particularly likeable... I perhaps like Meloni's character a bit more, either because it's a more cartoonish show so it's a little easier to take it less seriously (it's over-the-top in a way that softens it's rough edges?) although it may just be because it's Meloni. Although both actors are damn good. I'd be bummed if Ana watched either show over one of mine, because I'm cheering for mine obviously, but I wouldn't be bummed about either winning a poll. If I had to choose I think I'd go with Happy! Partially because it's a shorter show, also because it feels a bit more focused (which is kinda the same thing). They had a story to tell and they told it, without nearly as much meandering as it felt like Banshee had. (Although, to be fair, I quit on Banshee... early in season 3? Perhaps if I watched all of it, I'd feel differently.) They both kind of remind me of, like, Mad Men or Sopranos or Breaking Bad (in a very broad sense). So many people seem to like these shows, and I get it... these people just fucking suck. (The characters in the shows, not the people who like them.) I just don't like spending time with them. (Much easier with Happy!, like I said, because 1 - it's short and focused, 2 - it's more cartoonish and... fun? Silly? A fun combination of brutal and silly? and 3 - Chris Meloni) But I appreciate variety. I'd be really bummed if Ana was watching 3 shows like that concurrently (like, Breaking Bad + Banshee + Mad Men) but if it's a nice mix of types of shows 1 - comedy (Arrested Development) 2 - a more traditional show with likeable protagonists (I've suggested: Veronica Mars; Life; Keen Eddie; Batman: The Animated Series) and 3 - something darker, grittier (whatever word you prefer) like Happy! or Banshee, that'd be cool.

Oh yeah, and let's talk about actors real quick (by "us" I mean "I"; the royal "we", the editorial): so... Lili Mirojnick, who plays Det. Meredith McCarthy. LOVE her, she's so good in this. I'm flabbergasted that she's not in more things. I know her from the really shitty, aggressively unfunny "Fast & Furious" "parody" Superfast! (I haven't seen that movie, but I saw the Weekly Planet boys' Caravan of Garbage episode about it. And while the movie is TERRIBLE, the performers in it do as good a job as they could, given the terrible material. Not only was she in it, but also Dale Pavinski, who played the Vin Diesel character. You almost certainly don't know the name, but he played Taylor, the unhinged and overly enthusiastic mercenary Marine buddy of Barry's buddy in the first season of "Barry".) Ritchie Coster, the mob boss, seems like he's just doing an impression of Ben Kingsley's The Rabbi from "Lucky Number Slevin". Patrick Fischler - Smoothie - is such a weird fucking dude. He's so specific looking, I feel like I know him from stuff, but looking at his IMDB page... I don't know what. He was in Barry (coincidentally). Suits? Hail Caesar? The Mentalist? Californication? Castle? The Finder? Lie To Me? Burn Notice? The Middleman? Oh, look at that! Veronica Mars! That's probably the role that made him stick in my mind. (Idiocracy? Black Dahlia? Birds of Prey? (Again, haven't watched it, but saw the Caravan of Garbage about it.) Adventures of Brisco County Jr?) And finally, one more actor: speaking of coincidence (how Coster seems to be doing The Rabbi, recalling a movie you watched last month, Lucky Number Slevin), you mention it takes a particularly good actor to work across from a cartoon and make it seem believable, recalling another movie you watched last month. Shout-out to Mario Mario himself, Bob Hoskins.

While this was technically a present I took it from the list of monthly recommendations . Those aren't shows that are to get Ana to react to the whole series (although I'd really like her to watch the Magicians with us watching her watch them) but more to gauge how she reacts to certain types of shows and possibly entice her to watch the shows on her own . With each one I learn a little more and fine tune my next pick . She and I both seem to like dark inappropriate humor . And I do have a fondness for unlikable characters That end up doing the right thing . I'm having a little more trouble than usual controlling my arm today so this response will be shorter than your opus deserves but I found it interesting . The sheer number of shows that no one talks about that you mentioned above is impressive. I would be very happy if she ended up watching Veronica Mars or especially Life as a full time show . I don't think anyone else has ever mentioned the middleman but I love that show and I think it's on my list of things for her to watch the pilot of . Also can't remember the last time somebody watched Brisco County - Which I think would not work as a reaction show but I remember enjoying very much that was my horrible memory I cannot remember too much about it . To retouch upon my terrible memory I know that I watched all of Happy! but have no true recollection of the plot points nor any demarcation of seasons one and two . But I do not have a sense that the quality dropped off . Hope that helps . On random notes I'm one of those people who thought Mad Men was one of the greatest shows ever created and waited eagerly each week for the next episode . Sopranos and Breaking Bad came out while my life was rather chaotic and I never saw either one and it was too hyped by the time I had a chance . I hope I got the major beats out of your missive . I would recommend finishing out Happy! for you . As for Anna shows that dark slot I'm still hoping she'll reconsider the magicians . She thinks it would require too much concentration to be a good reaction but as anyone who's watched the show there's plenty of reaction to be had . Unfortunately episodes two through 6 would probably change her mind on that but then it takes off with a bang .

Ana, thank you dear, Lovely present . I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I enjoyed seeing it through your eyes . I told you we were taking a trip into the weird :) While I've seen most of the original Law and Order, somewhere in there I burnt out on cop and medical dramas and I've never seen any episodes of any of the spinoffs so the character connections were unknown to me . Pleased that aspect brought you joy . I am glad you took our original conversation and ran with it in this way, I very much enjoyed myself . Thank you again

I thought season one was brilliant. It was based on the four-issue comic (yes, just four issues) and they went balls-to-the-wall to try to bring it to life in all its horrific glory. And, for me, it worked. I thought season two was absolutely awful from the very beginning. It was not based on any comic material (none left to use), but completely made up for the show. I'm guessing they just didn't "get" what made the first season's material "work". But, if you asked me what that was, I couldn't tell you.
