Pierce is one of those characters that you will hate in some episodes. But isn't that bad actually in many others. I like him for comedy reasons, but as a real life person i think i could not stand being in a room with him for 30 min. Part of the problem is, i think, that he is the representation for everything that was wrong in the 70-80, when it comes to World views he is completely oblivious to the fact the he is being offensive. Half the time he doesn't even get why people are angry at him.

Yeah. There is a difference between racism due to hate and racism due to just ignorance and being raised around other racists. Neither Pierce nor Shirley hate anybody, but they are still perpetuating the racism/religious intolerance they were taught. It's a tricky thing to try to present, especially for comedic effect, and I think the show does a great job about showing how the idea of the latter form can be amusing.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. It has its hilarious moments like Troy agonizing over letting Pierce drown and Jeff Goldblooming,,,but the way the writters wrote Pierce this episode was one of the highlights of the entire series. I do wish they gave Pierce a bit of this humanity throughout the series even if it was just one episode a season. But we got the evil pierce we loved to hate instead haha. Still a great series and genius writers.
