Is it scary

Small nitpick: Indians are people with connection to the country of India (my parents are Indian-Canadians). I wish the guest used a term like Indigenous peoples instead.

I agree, I was surprised that in all his research he didn't find that Indigenous peoples don't use the term Indian.

Yeah this for me everytime he said ‘Indians’ I was like how can you be so knowledgeable about this and history yet still call them Indians 😭😭😭

Anonymous

Yeah that was weird. After I bit I just skipped until they got out of that discussion , I was mostly wanting to get to more modern stuff anyways.

I had this guy as a professor when I was at UNC!

Great interview!!

Americas indigenous people refer to themselves constantly as Indians so I think it might not be a big deal. https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/informational/impact-words-tips

My wife is Indian. Like from India. Using Indian as a term to refer to native Americans just feels outdated and makes my insides recoil slightly. Aside from just being geologically inaccurate. Good interview otherwise

Yep. It’s different from tribe to tribe (and even individual to individual) in the States. Some use ‘Indian’ or ‘American Indian’; some use ‘indigenous’, some use First Nations or First Peoples. Some use a term (or set of terms) in an official, written, public capacity but private names spoken and known only among their people
