The phrase y'all are searching for is "independent" wrestling. They are professionals in that they are paid and trained, often times trained better than mainstream professional wrestlers in larger companies for various reasons. That scene runs more on per appearance agreements for pay and is often times just a handshake deal with a promoter. There are thousands and thousands of wrestlers who travel from promotion to promotion, city to city, and work hundreds of dates a year and will never be seen on national television or sign a written contract with even the developmental level of the juggernauts of the industry. AEW is bridging that gap a little, WWE developmental had been trying to mine that talent as well for a while, but it is very much the tip of the iceberg.
