To answer the question about the difference between rock and pop, if you want to be a purist then yes there is definitely a difference between what you would call “rock” and “pop” at the time. “Rock and Roll” as a genre has a pretty stiff set of parameters, the main ones being a basis on the i iv v progression, call and response vocal/instrument motifs, and of course distorted guitars. Rock also has a heavy blues influence and in general when the more you go outside these parameters the less likely one would be to consider it “rock”. That is, if you’re an old loser who’s entire life is based on praising the music he listened to when he first started jackin it.

There was a hot sauce shop in my town growing up - the owner was an older guy, Vietnam vet; really good natured and easy going guy. He was definitely happy to be a struggling hot sauce merchant and not in the fucking military anymore lol.
