You know what? This one has snuck up on me and might be one of my new favorites. It was initially a video about something that I'm really passionate about (and something I'll certainly circle back to in a future video) but it just morphed into this topic somehow haha. There was just a TON of good research here and it was far too easy not to make.

As usual, I like to follow up the super emotionally taxing videos with something light, informative, and fun. That's what I was going for here, and I think that's what it ended up as. I hope you enjoy!

STILL debating the thumbnail situation for those of you curious from the editing stream lmao. Though I do have a little more inspiration I might iterate on after I finish writing this post. I hope you guys enjoy, let me know what you think below. I'll have some bloopers/extras for you on Monday and then we're on to the backlog video. LFG.

I really enjoyed this laid back one in wait of the behemoth that is the BACKLOG. I feel for me reviews impact me on a way such that when I hear a review for a game, my preconceived notions for that game will be validated, (like Elden Ring), or invalidated ( like Hollow Knight ( please don’t kill me)). Really interesting to see likely causes for this. Really enjoyed this one, next month is gonna hit in the heart

I love that test study. Even more so with the “bad bitches” edit. :) It, and the related discussion of self-fulfilling prophecies, reminds me of what Mark Rosewater said about how thinking like a gamer can be a huge advantage in life: “Gamers assume that the designers didn’t make the game unwinnable, and if you believe that there is a solution to a problem, you’re more likely to find one.” If someone believes you’re gifted, or a “main character” (to quote one of my favourite shirts :)), you’re more likely to manifest those traits. It doesn’t surprise me that amateur reviews are often so emotionally charged. I’ve written several reviews for novels over the past few years, and while some were in exchange for advance copies, others I wrote precisely because I had had a strong experience with the work in question. More often than not, that experience was negative, but even when it wasn’t, writing the review was a way of working through that experience, giving myself a debriefing more than trying to help other people find books that they would enjoy. Without that emotional charge, though, it’s rare that I’ll bother to leave even a couple of lines to say the book was “okay” or “could have been better”- I’ll just hit the three stars button and move on. I wish that I could have seen this video years ago, when I found it a struggle to come to terms with how different my opinions always seemed to be from the discourse surrounding games, before I grew into my own agency and confidence enough to say, “I’m glad you enjoy it, but it’s not for me,” or “I’m sorry you don’t enjoy it, but I do.” Back then, listening to reviews made me feel anxious and stupid, like I didn’t belong because I just didn’t “get it”. Now, there’s only one channel (Mortismal Gaming) whose reviews I can tolerate, and what sets him apart for me is his conversational style. It feels like sitting down and listening to a friend more than listening to a lecture from someone who knows more than you because they’re a “professional”. And the fact that he’s a completionist doesn’t hurt either- we do indeed feel drawn to reviewers who are like us in some way, it seems. :) I absolutely love the end of this video: “Just make sure that it really is up to you.” In my experience, the art of hearing your own voice is hard enough, and it’s another thing entirely to have the courage to listen to and follow it. There’s so much noise in the world, especially in the hype culture surrounding new video game releases or beloved classics… and yet, if we don’t let at least some of it in, we miss out on the richness that comes with viewing things from different perspectives, and the joy of discovering things that we would never otherwise have happened upon. As with all content, there’s a personal curation and filtering process that needs to take place if we’re going to engage with it healthily, and make sure that it is indeed serving us rather than leeching our time, energy, and attention. Great job as always. :)

Boy it really is a behemoth lmao, great word for it. Totally resonate with your take on reviews, it makes me immediately wonder if I'm crazy if ppl disagree. You can be allowed to live regarding HK haha, the game is amazing to me but there are certainly things about it that I can rub people the wrong way.

Man I love that Mark Rosewater quote, never heard that but yeah! I think that's absolutely true. No situation is unwinnable, very much reminds me of the Kobayashi Maru scene from star trek :) That's a big part of reviews that I didn't cover, regarding your book reviews experience. That people do write reviews as a way to process their emotions whereas publications have to write with an intended audience and answer the question "should you buy it?" Tons of other people don't write to answer that question, they're just finding closure in their written thoughts. Glad you found a trusted place for reviews and that your outlook changed! That's super important when you just want to play the damn game and not worry about all the noise haha. Though, I couldn't agree more that at least *some* noise is really healthy and a big part of the experience, ya know? Thanks as always Wendriel :)
