I think I'll remember this one as a giant writing exercise. I covered SO much in so many different ways in this one, yet somehow all kept it connected to elevators. As usual, no clue how well this one will be received, but for me it was an excellent warm up for 2023. That said...

I SIMPLY MUST WRITE SHORTER VIDEOS DAMMIT. This is just too much for me brother brother. I can't do 30+ minute videos every month haha, so I genuinely think my goal for the next video is just to force myself to wrap it up in under 20. We'll see what happens.

But I think I'm pretty happy with this one. Believe it or not, this video has been brewing for years. I mean what I say about having a weird reverence for elevators. Thay just... do something for me in games, idk. I hope that comes out here haha.

Let me know what you think! I'll have some behind the scenes and blooper stuff for ya next week. Cheers everyone. (ew I take it back, I can't say cheers). LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. (there that felt better)

My Strange Obsession With Virtual Elevators

Elevators are unsung heroes in games. They are strange little places that we all find ourselves for a brief moment in passing. In some cases they just hide a loading screen or move us from floor to floor, but today, I want to send a big weird love letter to the elevators in games that go above and beyond. And hopefully, by doing so, I can convince you that I am not insane for being oddly obsessed with them… Support Daryl Talks Games on Patreon! ▶▶ https://www.patreon.com/daryltalksgames Bonus content, early access, YOUR name at the end of videos, and more all for $1/month! I can entirely believe that I watched a 30 minute video on elevators. Twice. This feels like such a level-up for you as a writer and for the channel. It has everything that drew me to Psych of Play- the broad arc slicing effortlessly through game after game as though they were all made with this analysis in mind, the quick pace between points, the intrigue and suspenseful moments, and the tangential treatment of topics like the Elevator Game, which I first heard about in relation to the Elisa Lam case and immediately remembered as soon as the video started. The reason I say it's a level-up, though, is because it's absolutely not a Psych of Play, and yet you managed to preserve the form and soul of your style without the pillar of psychological research and studies to tie it back to reality. If making a Psych of Play is like playing Dark Souls, this is like a Soul Level 1 run. As though that wasn't triumph enough, this was about -elevators-, of all things. I have to admit a bit of skepticism when I first heard about the topic, though I have more than enough faith in you as a creator to reserve judgement until I saw the actual video. And wow, I not only entirely understand where you're coming from and will never look at an elevator the same way again, but I sincerely have a deeper respect and appreciation for how you see the world, how you've experienced these moments and translated that experience back to us. That's artistry, plain and simple. I thought that the jokes were excellent and appropriate and the section about Soma is truly haunting, especially with the point about Everest and the ocean depths. I don't think I'd ever have played Soma, but I'm glad that I watched Joseph Anderson's video on it years ago and that it exists. The questions that it asks are important ones. I also couldn't help thinking as I saw the Portal footage that the backlog project will likely give you a much wider vocabulary of games and scenarios to reference going forward, which is a benefit that seems obvious but which I hadn't articulated to myself until this point. It's fun to see some of the games mentioned in the weekly journals pop up in videos too. :) Congratulations, Daryl, and thank you. This one is going right on top of the DTG Greatest Hits list for me, alongside How Souls Games Save Souls and Dissociation in Omori. Please enjoy your weekend and some beyond-well-earned rest.

That was an amazing piece of work from thumbnail to credits and I'm so glad I played a small role in helping it get made. A resounding affirmation that letting yourself make videos without citing psych studies was the right decision. Now it will live until Elon buys Google. I don't get the "no Russian" reference, though.
