Yup. I rebranded. Psych of Play was too short.

jk. I'm tired. Too much screen time in the past 72 hours...

Well I've been talking a lot about Dark Souls and it was the last straw for me to make a vid on a topic I've been sitting on for over a year. The gap between the checkpoint and the boss.... and how it's annoying (or something else) to constantly have to work your way back through it just to retry the boss.

I absolutely loved making this video. I have no clue how it will perform, but I feel like I knocked it out of the park. The humor felt right, the examples felt solid, the research felt relevant. Let me know what you think!

Live commentary on Sunday, looking forward to chatting!

The Most Important Place In Gaming | Psych of Play

Thanks to Keeps for sponsoring this video! Head to https://keeps.com/daryltg to get 50% off your first order of hair loss treatment! There are a lot of… places in gaming. A lot of spaces. But the one space that I think is so often thought about but rarely talked about is the space between the respawn point and the boss or even where you are currently stuck at. Today on Psych of Play, let’s dive into that gap and talk about how our minds handle when that space is small and when it is vast. Great vid to start of the year !!! Just realized I am a bit like you when it comes to the gap between bosses in video games. But there it is I believe in some games like digimon world and such the fail being spawned at a long distance and then consequently grind and triumph over such hardship feels a lot more helpful and rewarding in a weird way !!! Also thanks for the offer but if I ever start balding I will go full Heisenberg minus the meth thingy LOL !!! Oh and that last clip was funny as always !!! LMAO

I couldn't agree more- you knocked this one out of the park. There's a flow to it, an energy and cohesion that felt a step above even your usual high quality of work. You should be extremely proud of it. It's always interesting to discuss topics like these where the "truth" is really a synthesis of the different points on the continuum, that "it depends" is absolutely correct but the exploration of the factors involved can lead to such a depth of understanding. If I could take the walks back as an opportunity and invitation to calm down, take a breath and maybe a break, I'd probably get a lot less irate when I can't beat something. :) I particularly loved the ending to this video, the grand, soaring music and the philosophical, optimistic note of the narration, the reframing of that walk of shame as an encouragement break and the idea that the space is cheering you on. It's a powerful idea, that even those background, frustrating elements of a game might be made into allies. And I also completely got that "customer behind you putting the bar down behind your groceries", LOL. It's something that I dislike so much that I usually pre-emptively put the bar down as soon as someone even begins to approach the register. I definitely felt a resonance on that one. :) Looking forward to the commentary, as always!
