Amigos. Fellow weebs. Here is your early access for the newest Psych of Play! You might have guessed based on recent polls and tweets, but we are talking about the beauty of the Parry.

This was extremely fun to make and was one of the few times where I found research that genuinely surprised me. The first half is sort of me gushing over/explaining why parries work so well and the second half is a bit of tangent on that surprising research I found. Still kind of geeking out about it honestly haha, and I think it ties in beautifully with the topic.

Let me know what you think! I hope you are doing well and I do have some life updates I'll be looping you all in on soon. Looks like we're moving again so the upload schedule could get a little wonky lol

Why Parrying Is So Satisfying | Psych of Play

Parries in gaming are an absolute gift. Being able to suddenly shift the momentum with a well timed input is satisfying in a way that most of us simply can’t get enough of. Today, on Psych of Play, we’re dissecting the prairie, the psychology of what makes it feel so good, and how it is the absolute perfect illustration of a momentum swing in competition. Excellent work, as always! I loved the discussion of variable reinforcement schedules and how well that tied into the discussion of psychological momentum. I think that the rarity of those moments makes you appreciate the amount of skill they take to execute, which in turn really does increase the PM much more than a random success that you have nothing to do with (like a crit in Persona). I was also thinking of the audience effect during the discussion of PM, and how that can also impact your performance in similar ways. In that case it's more about the audience boosting your natural tendencies and accelerating the results (if I recall correctly), but I can see the mechanism being similar too, if you look at parries from the angle that they increase your self-confidence and thereby make the "internal audience" much more encouraging? Random thought. :)

Even though the online is really bad, I love street fighter 30th Anniversary. Every time I go against someone in third strike I always get my cheeks clapped. So after I would get absolutely obliterated the first round and lose all hope of winning the match, I just go for parries praying I could confirm it to Ryu’s crouching medium kick into SA1. Probably the reason why I’m not getting much better at the game but I have so much fun doing it, even though it mostly never works out. Crazy to see how such a small game mechanic could really just make your experience 10X more exciting. Amazing video dawg this really hit home!

Good thoughts for sure! I definitely think PM would favor someone who is already getting a boost from Social Facilitation (when the audience makes you better). Which, is sort of the equivalent of the home team being an underdog but riding some momentum to an early lead and being tough to catch. I’d love to do a video on how being the “home team” vs “away team” actually affects performance in sports, though that would be tough to tie back into video games haha

Hey thanks so much! I know exactly what you mean though, smash, GG, SF, I’m the same. Once I start playing poorly I just go for stuff. When it works out, it makes me feel like a champion for a hot little moment there 😂
