What’s Happening in the First 83 seconds? | Psych of Play

Does a story need words? Does a tale need specifics? Does a picture need color? The brain does a good job of noticing patterns and filling in the blanks when it’s running low on information. And because of this, fan theories and speculation can be every bit as engaging as the content itself. But why are humans so naturally talented at explaining the unclear? That’s exactly what we're here to discuss today. Great episode as usual! Your tempo and quick asides always are perfectly placed and keep the episode from becoming a straight lecture. As for the content, I think you’ve got some very interesting points there. I remember playing through limbo the first time and trying to figure out purpose. I never could figure out why I enjoyed the game so much (besides the general mood of the game). This definitely put it into perspective. I do have to ask though, do you think this more abstract type of storytelling if pushed too far lead to lazy storytelling? Have a good vacation! See you on twitch!

Just watched it and wanted to make a comment aside from my dumb YouTube memeposts, I love some of the more ambiguous stories especially if they focus a lot on the environment or world building without being too obvious. I think it's great to play a game with vague story and some hints and lore sprinkled around and to form your own idea. And yeah man take a break if you gotta you've done some great stuff so far. Don't want you to suffer for our sake, I'll still be here when you're back!

Thanks Kaleb! I feel like I’m starting to get a lot better at the pacing, which tbh makes these a lot more fun to make haha. Great point, I do think there is a healthy balance, right? Like I think there needs to be enough detail to chew on, but without overcooking it. I’m actually a big fan of little things like hiding extra details for those that really look for it. You see that in shadow of the colossus or even in inside where you can potentially unlock another ending. Like give me enough direction to *want* to discover more and then actually have something for me to find.

Yeah man, I’m the same way. I’ve always had a really soft spot for when the environment tells the story and lets you piece it together. Like discovering something in BOTW that clearly used to be something in a flashback or in an older game is much more rewarding than nonstop cutscenes, ya know?
