This was 14 years after the end of World War 2. I'm guessing that Hogarth dad served and died in WWII, that's why Hogarth had those army boots, jacket and helmet. Those are classic airforce or parachute soldier uniform, so from his dad. It also explains why his first response to hearing the giant was to get dressed in the uniform and salute in the mirror. It's pretty tragic because it means his mom was pregnant with Hogarth when his father died. What makes it very tragic is that it was at the very end of the war. Judging from Hogarths age and the facts about the war his dad was in the war with Japan since it lasted longer than the war against Germany. Towards the end of the war, many soldiers were flying and dropping bombs on Japan and their planes got shot down a lot.

For more SciFi you should catch Titan AE.

Not an animated film but you should watch "Pacific Rim" if you love sci-fi as much as I do you'll enjoy it greatly! It's like Mobile Suit Gundam Wing meets Godzilla. What a ride! I loved it! Also I second what C J has commented you should watch Titan AE you'll love it! :)

The reason Kent (superman reference) was so gun-ho on destroying the iron giant was pretty much a mix of trying to get promotions and cold-hard cold war paranoia.

Pacific rim is one of the best popcorn movies I've ever seen. It is such a great watch in cinema with big speakers

Thank you for watching this! Definitely one of my favorites! Another one that you should check out is Disney's Tarzan (1999). That one is INCREDIBLE. Everything about it is truly fantastic! It has the same animation style as this one. Another one from around the same era is Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). Not as great, in my opinion, but still worth seeing at least once.
