Hey JV! I'm Trey, long time follower on YouTube, recent subscriber on here. I am a fellow content creator, but my primary career is actually in musical theatre! I do pretty much everything, director, actor, singer, musician, etc. but I am primarily a lighting designer and programmer. So needless to say, I LOVE musicals! This is a rather special show to me. Yes, it was originally a book from 1988, and then came out as a movie in 1996. In 2011, it made it's stage musical debut in the UK before it finally got picked up in the US in 2013. I saw it on Broadway in 2016 at the Shubert Theater. What a gorgeous show it was. Tim Minchin was picked up to write the music, which I think is the main thing that made the musical version a success. Minchin's wild personality and off the wall writing style lends itself very well to a Roald Dahl story. The musical version of the story chooses to focus a little less on the telekinesis and more on the relationships between everyone, as musicals tend to try and do, since we want the music to lean into the storytelling more than anything. And I quite like that, there are some beautiful stories to tell here. And it's also just harder to make those effects convincing on stage. They kept a few of the important gags. And of course they put some of those back into the movie musical As far as movie musicals go, this was one of my favorites. I do have some notes about a few things from the stage musical they changed that I don't think make sense, but overall, it flows well, the musical score is strong and keeps a lot of the wonderful original music! I worked on Matilda the Musical in 2021 as lighting designer and music supervisor. I can say confidently that in the stage productions, and in this film edition, we do have a mechanism to spin the real pigtail child. It's not real hair pulling or throwing, but it IS real spinning! This was the last show I was a part of that my mom got to see before she passed away, so it keeps a special place in my heart! I feel it really important to remind those who might not quite realize, that her powers are essentially the result of having so much brain power and so much understand for how the world is actually supposed to operate, and having it being constantly suppressed by the external forces around her. So they weren't kidding when they essentially said in the story that so much built up in the brain that it shot out through the eyes. When that external pressure was relieved, her powers were sort of lost. I'm sure that if Matilda was put under similar emotional stress in the future, it would return. I know they don't really say that in this one, but I think I heard you mention that about the 1996 movie.

I have a lot of thoughts, but first I wanted to say that I’m so glad you enjoyed this musical. Also, I am so glad you watched with captions. I thought about mentioning that you probably would want to do that because their British accents are strong and honestly a bit difficult to understand. And the lyrics are written so well so I’m glad you caught them all. The original 1996 Matilda movie is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. I used to watch it constantly as a kid. Like I have the entire movie memorized. Me and my twin were both obsessed and still quote it in everyday life. I had seen that Matilda the Broadway musical was getting more and more popular, but I literally forced myself to avoid it because I really didn’t want to ruin my experience with the story if I didn’t like it. I was so nervous to watch this the first time, but I am so happy I did, and I’m glad I got to experience your reaction JV!! I have grown to love it just as much, if not more than the original movie!! I’ve watched it many, many, many times and each time it makes me cry. It feels more real in a sense and there are so many points in this film that are just true masterpieces. “Quiet” always makes me sob. I have autism (as I know your daughter has too). I was only diagnosed about 3 and a half years ago at age 21. This song seriously incapsulates the inner monologue of what it feels like to be autistic. The feeling of being super overstimulated and confused and overwhelmed constantly. It shows the experience of dissociating SO WELL. “Quiet” also shows the spiraling of thoughts that can happen due to anxiety When I first watched this movie I literally balled my eyes out because I had never heard a song that so specifically captured every single feeling of mine before. I feel like Matilda is definitely on the spectrum. Even Tim Minchin who wrote the music for the musical talked about how he modeled some of the traits after his own autistic daughter, and I feel like I definitely see some neurodivergent traits in Matilda, which is what makes me love her as a character even more. It’s interesting because I think the story inside the story added this whole emotional layer that was missing in the 1996 movie. I also love that the characters of each Matilda version are so different. The original Matilda was much more soft spoken and calm, whereas this Matilda is a lot more bold and brave and she’s constantly standing up for herself and everyone around her. I think the little girl who played Matilda (Alisha Weir) was phenomenal and the perfect choice. She is actually Irish so she created a British accent for this film, which I think is so impressive of someone so young. Everyone in this cast was extraordinarily talented. I think they searched worldwide for these kids. I am a musical lover and this musical definitely in my top 5 musical movies ever! Thanks for reacting, I’m really happy you loved it!!
