The 'conservatives' realised they have essentially lost the fight against gay rights. So they have adapted. Trans panic is the new gay panic, and unfortunately it's working. Here in Germany we see a lot of transphobia and racism coming from celebrity second-wavers, for example. Getting older often means people get more conservative in any case, and it's one of those sad facts of life that differences are forgotten as long as you have someone to hate together. Even between proto-fascist 'conservatives' and erstwhile-progressive groups.
